Love in the Time of Influenza
Jeff has the flu. And that sucks because he had already scheduled a vacation day for today.
A vacation day during which we were going to have a family portrait made before indulging in some super deluxe kick-ass fun with the kids.
Me: Call work. Tell them you want to switch it over from Vacation to Sick.
Jeff (shivering, on the verge of being vomitious): It doesn't work that way. Blurgh.
So, Jeff has gone back to bed, and here I sit--all showered and ready to do something fun. Any suggestions?
Wait. While I'm here, may I share a few things that I'm really loving right now?
1. Jukebox the Ghost. (Music will start playing when you click the link. Be aware.)
Jeff told me about them a few days back, and I became an instant Fan Girl after downloading the Woxy.com performance from iTunes.
Do you have some time? Because here they are. Piano driven perfection!
woxy.com presents Jukebox the Ghost from Soft City Lights on Vimeo.
2. I love this shirt.
My friend Laura, who is the founding mother of the Mommayaya Fabulous Elf Slipper Store sent me the link a few weeks back. It has been a long time since I've fallen in love with a shirt. But love it, I do.
3. 73.6% of you will find this hokey, but: I love Angie the Pig Angel. I relate to Angie the Pig Angel. I AM Angie the Pig Angel.

at 3/19/2008 9:33:44 AM- Angela, I'd like to ask for your advice on a knitting matter. I don't knit (yet) but I have a friend who is an avid knitter. She's going through a tough time and knitting calms her so I thought I'd send her some yarn as a pick me up. My fear though, is sending a useless gift. Is one skein enough to do anything important with? Do I need to find a pattern before I buy the yarn? I just want her to be happy not give her more work to do, you know? Any direction you or your readers can give will be gratefully received.
Sorry your exciting things got torpedoed!

at 3/19/2008 9:52:34 AM- Kizz--Let's see. If you're buying sock yarn, go with 100g. (Most sock yarns are sold in either 50 or 100g skeins.) After that, you're probably best off choosing a yarn, and then asking someone who works at the yarn store to help you estimate yardage for a scarf or sweater (or bag or whatever).
Many yarn stores also sell fun kits--the pattern and yarn are all available in one brilliant package.
Another safe option is to give a gift certificate. The Loopy Ewe has great yarns (and excellent customer service), and your friend can choose her yarn online and have it delivered to her. Very fun. (You could order the gift certificate today and she'll receive it within the next few hours!)
Let me know what you go with! I hope your friend feels better soon.

at 3/19/2008 12:08:06 PM- A gift certificate is a perfect idea and I keep sending her links to pictures of things that you've bought from there. I'll head over and do that soon so she can have a treat.
Her dad is elderly and he fell and injured himself pretty badly. He's going to be OK but the road to OK is long and unpredictable so long term treats and stress relief like knitting are very important. Thank you so much for your help, this is just what I needed to know!

at 3/19/2008 1:06:07 PM- Sorry Jeff is sick. Maybe his employer will take pity on him when he goes back and change it to a sick day. I see why you like that shirt. That model, Charlie, looks like he's wearing a skirt! Agh! It's not like he's in a kilt or anything sexy like that.

at 3/19/2008 5:48:35 PM- Wait, I thought I was supposed to be listening to Vampire Weekend and now it's Jukebox the Ghost? I can't keep up with you kids and your rock and roll music. I'm turning in my hipster card and buying stock in Geritol.

at 3/19/2008 7:32:08 PM- I absolutely love being intro'd to new music! Something about his voice reminds me of Robert Smith's (The Cure). And I mean that in a good way.
Piano dudes are so sexy.

at 3/19/2008 8:00:57 PM- Alli--You're the nicest. (I'm all red-faced at the thought that someone would want to buy the shirt for me!) AND, Chuck loved the hat. The rest of the family found it to be a bit spooky, but Chuck loved it. And that's what counts, right?
Susan--I thought the same thing, but upon further inspection, I realized that he's wearing an apron. A really awesome apron.
Michelle--I want Wellies, too!
Badger! Badger! Badger!--I have no idea what I'm supposed to be listening to. BUT, just today Jenorama mentioned Vampire Weekend to me, so it must be good.
Badger!--Sorry. I just had to do it again.
Surcie--I can sort of hear the Robert Smith similarities. I can really hear the Freddie Mercury similarities. But best of all? The Ben Folds similarities! (Similarities is a really difficult word to type, by the way. I've now typed it four times, and I messed it up Every Time by tripping on the rities.)
