(This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Febreze NOTICEables.)
My house is a disaster. And it’s sort of funny (sort of), because I own three gigantic books dedicated to “homekeeping.” (Those three books are currently hugging each other on the bottom level of my bookshelf—the level that holds books that are to be phased out as new books are acquired.)
A few years ago, Jeff and I hired a woman to come in and clean our house once each month. If I remember correctly, she charged $80 and as soon as she arrived, she hit the ground running and cleaned everything she could in four hours. It was amazing. (I miss her. Can you tell that I can barely type because I’m crying so hard right now?! I really miss her.) Every time she left the house, it smelled like oranges for about three days. And to me? Nothing was better than sitting on the couch after she left and inhaling oranges with the realization that The House is Completely Clean Right Now.
A few weeks ago, Meredith asked why our house can’t smell like Mombo’s house. (The girls refer to my mom as Mombo.) Anyway, Mombo’s house is clean and often smells like that stuff you spray on a cloth when you’re about to dust. (What is that stuff called? Dusting elixir? Dust juice? I don’t believe I’ve ever bought it. Heh. Please don’t ever blow on my lamps.) Sometimes Mombo’s house smells like clean laundry. Occasionally it smells like something is baking. It never (ever) smells like our house.
“Meredith, until we stop living like pigs, our house will never smell like Mombo’s house.”
Ah, but then I got an e-mail from BlogHer. (Those e-mails always seem to come at the perfect time.) Believe it or not, I was asked to review Febreze NOTICEables, and I quickly accepted the offer.
About a week later, I received the following NOTICEables:
- Warm Celebration / Pumpkin Harvest (from their Seasonal line)
- Morning Walk / Cleansing Rain (from their Natural line)
- Autumn Spice / Harvest Festivities (from their Seasonal line)
I also received the following NOTICEable refills:
- Pure Refreshment / Summer Storm (from their Fresh & Clean line)
- Clothesline Breeze / Meadow Songs (from their Natural line)
- Lavender Comfort / Gentle Vanilla (from their Soothing line)
- Hibiscus / Rainforest (from their Exotic line)
(You probably noticed that each NOTICEable lists two scents. The oil warmer actually switches back and forth to keep things interesting. Plus, when the scent switches from one side to another, a soft light switches sides, too. If your cats are anything like mine, watching the changing of the light will keep them busy for days.)
Because I tend to be my happiest in the fall, I quickly assembled and plugged in the Autumn Spice / Harvest Festivities NOTICEable in our family room. I put it on the lowest setting, and within minutes I was doing that thing where you close your eyes, smile, and inhale as deeply as you can. Excellent.
Later that afternoon when Meredith returned home from school, she breathed in the autumnal goodness and asked if we could put together a scarecrow and perhaps spend the night in a pumpkin patch. (I’m exaggerating. But she DID tell me that the house smelled “really good—like muffins.”)
This evening I’ll be plugging up Lavender Comfort / Gentle Vanilla in my bedroom. Because they are part of the Soothing line, I’m convinced that the scents will reach out, pat me on the back, and whisper, “There, there, Pudding. I forgive you for not yet emptying those laundry baskets from last week.” (The clothes are folded, I just can’t seem to lift those folded clothes and put them into the drawers! It’s a living hell, isn’t it?)
So, anyway, the house is still not clean, but it smells clean, and that’s a start. (That’s a start, right? Right?!) AND, according to the packaging, the scents (on the low setting) will last for an entire month. Best of all, they don’t simply mask any existing foul odors, they eliminate them and freshen the air. (We all know how Febreze works, right? I used to spray my clothes with it after leaving smoky bars in college! Worked like a charm.)
Would you like to share in the Febreze goodness? Just leave a comment telling me the most important thing you do to maintain a clean, fresh home (or at least the appearance of a clean, fresh home). On Tuesday, October 27th, I’ll randomly generate a winner to receive a $100 Visa gift card as well as a Febreze gift basket! (Be sure to leave a working e-mail address!)

I’m not going to get attacked for commenting, right?
I totally love the Noticeables myself. Use them all the time. Just wish they were cheaper (hear that, Febreze? $5 for a refill is a BIT pricey when you have one near each litter box). I like the autumn scents, too, and now that the weather is cooler it might be time to switch to them.
Look at that, a mini-review. And they didn’t even pay me to say any nice things.

Oh! What I would not give to have a house that smelled like muffins. Currently it does not. Instead it smells like chili because I made that yesterday and now it’s too cold to open up all the windows and air things out. And that’s probably the most effective thing I do – open windows. Is that sad? That it’s not something dramatic like vacuuming with special powder or spraying down all the surfaces? I hope it’s not sad because I never do those things. Sometimes I do light a candle though, so there’s that.
3 Kristen // Sep 28, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Ha! I spray febreze! Or I light a candle. Actually clean my house to get rid of weird smells? NO! Too much work!
4 Jill // Sep 28, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I usually just light candles. I can’t remember the last time I actually dusted. Sad.
5 jana // Sep 28, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Oh, it’s all about maintaining the illusion of cleanliness at our house, not actually cleaning. I have a three-year-old and a nine-month-old! Cut me some slack!
I love stacking things, clearing up clutter to show more surface area. Then I use a dirty burp cloth to mop up visible dust. Envy me!
6 Neena // Sep 28, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I light candles in lieu of actually cleaning. And about 4 times per year, I hire a wonderful woman (Joclyn) to clean my house from top to bottom. Works for me!
7 Dana // Sep 28, 2009 at 4:42 pm
The most important thing I do is open the windows as often as possible.
8 LaurenR // Sep 28, 2009 at 6:45 pm
I clean my bathroom. First, it gives me the feeling that I am really a very clean and tidy person, what with the wonderfully clean bathroom and all. And then, the cleaning products produce their own clean smell which advertises to everyone that the house is VERY CLEAN in spite of appearances. If I feel I must do something more to make the house seem clean I will fluff up the throw pillows on the couch. But that’s only if company’s coming. :)

Two magic people arrive every other week and I come home to a fantastically clean house!
10 jami // Sep 29, 2009 at 6:26 am
I try to keep the public (downstairs) tidy and relatively clean. The upstairs is a disaster much of the time, but no one goes there except kids playing, and since they’re responsible for a good bit of the mess, I figure that’s their problem.
Also, when we redid our kitchen, I chose tile for the floor that is the same color as the mud that said children (and the pets) track in on their feet. That helped a lot with the appearance of cleanliness :)
11 Ryan E // Sep 29, 2009 at 6:50 am
I try to invite people over often. Those frantic 20 minutes before they come, with me scrubbing the bathroom and Roomba taking care of the living room floor are the best cleaning I get done all week.
12 Michele // Sep 29, 2009 at 7:39 am
I spray everything with Pine-sol. Not because I adore the smell of Pine-sol, but it definitely makes the house smell like it was just cleaned from top to bottom. By my old Polish grandmother. Who was so fanatic about her clean house she would scrub (SCRUB with scrub brush and bucket) her front stoop every morning. She is probably scowling down at me from heaven right now. But my intentions are good!
13 erika // Sep 29, 2009 at 7:41 am
I shove everything into closets or bring it all upstairs and then tell guests that the upstairs is under construction – best not go up there. I sometimes start a pot on the stove and fill it with cinnamon and cloves and water and let it simmer for a while.
14 Angie N // Sep 29, 2009 at 7:43 am
Throwing things in the basement is a good idea, as long as no one else goes down there, all looks acceptable.
15 Wendy // Sep 29, 2009 at 8:30 am
Um, I clean up the dog poop. Is that wrong? We have a 7 pound chihuahua that we’re fostering and she seems to only have to poop *between* times we take her outside. If she weren’t so stinking cute, I’d kick her to the curb. We also keep the child’s door shut. He’s 12. Febreeze could make bank off of having a selection that looked cool for 12 year old boys. Just sayin’!

Um, I have a cleaning lady.

Every Saturday morning, while the baby boy sleeps, we clean. My husband does the vacuuming and mopping. I dust and clean the bathrooms. We make sure all the toys are put away in the right places. The one who finishes first cleans the kitchen. We are efficient. The house is tidy. John regularly washes out the vacuum canisters (so much cat fur!).
Our house still smells like hot poo. (The diaper pail is in our bathroom, which gets afternoon sun. It’s swell.)
Help a sister out!
18 Jennifer // Sep 29, 2009 at 9:52 am
Well, with two senior cats & a puppy, I find the best thing to do is to scatter bottles of cleaner , rolls of paper towels, & garbage bags around the house, so that you can clean up smelly, foul, gross accidents at any time extremely easily.
I LOVE Febreze!!! :) :) :)
19 Beth // Sep 29, 2009 at 10:18 am
Open windows, run the vacuum, wash and furminate dog, etc. But a clean sink and clean bed linens (and towels) make all the difference.
20 Jane // Sep 29, 2009 at 11:29 am
I only have a slight “appearance of a clean, fresh home.” I turn on the house fan and spray either Febreze (!) or citrus spray in the return air vent.
And I hide things under the skirted furniture.
21 Carrie // Sep 29, 2009 at 11:32 am
I have two young children, five cats, and a dog. My secret is disinfecting wipes and keeping all the doors closed. And huddling under my covers holding my nose.
22 Michelle Dien // Sep 29, 2009 at 11:47 am
The most important thing that I do to keep my house clean is take out the garbage…or put together the garbage and have my BF do it :)..either way it removes the ick from my home :)
23 The Coffee Lady // Sep 29, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I put orange essential oil in my mop bucket.
And I read the Flylady website. (I read it. I don’t DO it)
I don’t want to win any Febreze. Sorry. Can’t stand the stuff.
24 Mitzi // Sep 29, 2009 at 12:34 pm
I dislike cleaning VERY much! Our house gets cleaned at least once a week. By cleaning, I mean: clean the bathroom (toilet, vanity and floor every week, tub is included every other), sweep/vacuum, mop (we have either laminate or wood laminate), dust everything. We have three dogs that live in the house with us. So, often times I light candles because I think the house smells too “doggy”. But, I have found that cleaning regularly, keeps the odors, fur and dust to a minimum.
I seen the febreeze commercials and have thought that it was a good concept, but too costly for me. (remember, we live on one income and I try to make as much of our cleaning products/detergents myself).
25 Beth // Sep 29, 2009 at 6:39 pm
One little cup of bleach in all three toilets before I leave the house. They suddenly appear clean (although commercials would have us believe I’ve just whitened the germs that still linger in the bowl – ew) and the bathrooms smell sterile. It’s all about the smell.
26 Ashley // Sep 29, 2009 at 9:12 pm
I actually use the spray-kind Febreeze air deodorizers. They work like a charm, even with garlic (I use tons of fresh garlic when cooking).
27 ShootingStarsMag // Sep 29, 2009 at 11:46 pm
oh wow, these sound awesome. i’m really curious about the rain one. :)
As for what we do…we use scented sprays. Normally just the bathroom though.

Don’t touch the dust. You can’t see it until there’s a fingerprint in it.
Kidding. Kind of. I Windex the bathroom mirrors and Pledge the coffee table. If people smell Windex and Pledge they assume you clean all the time. Suckers.
31 Liz // Sep 30, 2009 at 10:52 am
The most important thing we do is have the nanny and another little toddler stay at our house twice a week. The knowledge that there will be people in the house all day crawling around on the floor usually gets us to vacuum, straighten up, and occasionally even mop.
32 Amy in KC // Sep 30, 2009 at 11:31 am
I pile all miscellaneous stuff into a laundry basket and put it in our spare bedroom (which is always a DISASTER!, only sometimes with multiple exclamation points).
I also do the dishes every night before bed, and scrub bathrooms every other Saturday.
33 Valerie // Sep 30, 2009 at 11:55 am
It’s all about the illusion of cleanliness. If the kitchen counter is free of dirty dishes, my hair is vacuumed off the bathroom floor (I shed like a maniac), and the piles of mail and junk are cleaned up in the living room, I’m feeling all right.
34 Liz aka Javagirl // Sep 30, 2009 at 1:09 pm
I usually bleach my counter vaccuum every other day I put a fabric sheet in shoes in dh side of closet I use the febreeze for Pet odors and I have one in the car for the seats… that’s in a cute take in the car size.
I have one close to the bathroom a plug in.. I change for season flavors but I like the new idea of this new one I’ll have to give it a try or better yet maybe I’ll win Not possible.. I never win blog prizes but who knows..lol
35 Deb // Sep 30, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Seriously, I have to be careful about scents because if my house smells like vanilla my brain thinks “cookies” and if my house smells like pumpkin pie, my brain explodes and then in minutes I’m alternating bites of pie and squirts of whipped cream right out of my grocery cart.
Even orange makes me want a screwdriver.
Pine works. Storms, songs, I bet those would be fine too.
36 Carole G. // Sep 30, 2009 at 4:41 pm
I know it’s kinda sick, but I LOVE to vacuum and not just the carpet but the wood and tile too. I love seeing the freshly fluffed path left by the vacuum and I get so excited when you see a big ole dust ball of pet hair get sucked from the corners of the hard floors! I like to go without shoes most of the time inside the house, so no crunchies on the floor is my idea of a clean house.

Despite not being a US resident I still feel the urge to add my two cents.
I have big hang ups about not being a great ‘housemaker’ and find it most comforting that a close friend who I admire for her efficiency and organisation has a house as messy as mine.
Smell is very important to me so if the house doesn’t feel so fresh I make coffee or bake. Or fry garlic.
Everyone in our house loves garlic and the only problem is that the smell of it leaves everyone anticipating a tasty supper.
42 Christa // Oct 1, 2009 at 5:08 pm
We have a new rule with our big dog. When someone lets him outside they have to wipe down the walls with a disinfectant wipe (like lysol wipes) and sweep the floor in his room. It really has helped keep the smell and hair situations under control.

My roommates and I each take a room. One gets the bathroom (sucker) one gets the living room and I get the kitchen. Having one person maintain one area is so much more manageable.
45 Val G // Oct 2, 2009 at 7:20 pm
To keep our home smelling fresh, we take the trash out right away and keep the dog off the furniture and on her own little beds with washable covers throughout the house.
46 mary // Oct 3, 2009 at 5:39 am
I always use a clean smelling disposable wipe on the little things that get grimmey. like door handles, remote controls, refrigerator door handles and any counter tops. it only takes a second. lemon is a good scent to use for the pop up toweletts to clean with. Basically any washable surface. Especially now with it being so close to flu season.

The most important thing I do to maintain a clean fresh home is to make sure the air is circular no matter what. There are so many others I do to make our house is fresh and clean. Air refreshers are always must haves plus never leave dirty dishes overnight, pack trash daily, vacuum daily and mop/dust regularly. I dry clean my rugs and bleach towels to sanitize regularly as well, these really help!

As mom to a 27 month old, a 12 week old, a 100 pound doberman and a long haired cat ANYTHING with febreeze in it, on it or near it is a plus in my book. Candles (up high, of course!), swiffers and disinfecting wipes are all a must at our house. There are also LEVELS of clean at out house – friend clean, family clean and in-law clean. Why is it that my friends are the most understanding? :o)
56 Anita // Oct 5, 2009 at 1:56 pm
I think what’s most important is that I try to make sure no one leaves wet towels or other linens lying around, the trash is taken out regularly, and the dishes are clean. (I know, you’d think those are obvious things… but sometimes the most obvious are the ones most likely to be forgotten or neglected.) :)

We have a toddler with a hefty appetite, and two very stinky little mischevious puppies, so our house smells like a combination diaper pail/animal shelter – not pleasant. We have to keep things pretty well picked up, (see above, toddler who eats EVERYTHING), and I have a Dyson that I love to use, so I feel like the house is mostly clean, but man, it just always smells, er, well, less than welcoming.
66 Kate // Oct 6, 2009 at 11:07 am
I am of the “open a window or light a scented candle” school of thinking. I LOVE the Febreze candles, they burn for a long time and the scents are wonderful and light- not cloying like other candles can be.

Swiffer (only with a damp paper towel instead of the expensive Swiffer refills — sorry, Swiffer) whenever I’m on the phone. We have a big Yellow Lab (aka: shedding machine) and lot of tile floors, so pushing that thing around counts as “exercise”, “dog hair removal” and “relationship maintenance” (the phone chat) . I feel like a multi-tasking champion!

Reading these comments makes me feel better about my house. I used to clean, but that was before the miracle of birth.
93 txsjewels // Oct 8, 2009 at 11:49 am
i think cleanliness is an objective thing when it comes to the house. i think a clean sink and a clear living room floor is good enough for family. real company may require a vacuum. better be important company though!
94 Maren Madsen // Oct 8, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Close doors. Because sometimes when living with three little boys (and one big boy) the only thing you can do is close the bathroom or bedroom door. There! Noise and smell all gone!
95 katrina // Oct 8, 2009 at 12:10 pm
i have a candle that smells like cupcakes. so i hide things and light the candle. mmmm.
96 Tanya // Oct 8, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I always clean the bathroom and vacuum if someone is coming over -that makes the place look clean.
And, if I want my place to look clean for myself, I turn off some lights and light a few candles – works like a charm! :)

The most important thing I do to maintain a clean, fresh home is agree to host playgroup on a regular basis. It’s the only thing that forces me to really clean.
99 Tamara B. // Oct 8, 2009 at 7:56 pm
When the weather gets cooler I open all of the windows to air out the house, I vacuum three times a week and use fragrant candles and sprays.

Cleaning – not so much. I AM a candle fanatic, however! The issue there is that my husband is worried I will one day burn down the house by forgetting how many candles I lit and where. I love the idea of NOTICEables as I’m pretty sure they won’t burn down the house.
102 Elaine // Oct 9, 2009 at 11:52 am
I put baking soda in my kitty litter and turn on a tart warmer. Instant clean…smell!
103 Em // Oct 9, 2009 at 2:59 pm
The largest source of “dirtiness” in our house is created by our 4 month old puppy. She’s a large German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix and leaves long black hairs everywhere! Not to mention, the drool upon living room upholstery. And the paw tracks across our kitchen and dining areas. I keep it clean by lots of vacuuming, bleaching of linoleum, and vacuuming & cleaning of the couch. It’s exhausting!
104 Emily N. // Oct 9, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I open the windows to let fresh air circulate.
105 Dee // Oct 10, 2009 at 8:31 am
I just try to keep the giant Old English Sheepdog dry and clean. But with snow that’s not easy. I swiffer the floors and vacuum the couch cushions regularly. Method wipes help with the germs and smells too!
106 Rhonda // Oct 10, 2009 at 3:46 pm
it’s important to keep the kitchen clean, because it’s the first thing you walk into in our apartment. as long as i swipe the counters with clorox wipes and throw the dishes in the washer, i can fake perfect cleanliness in a pinch!
107 TJ // Oct 10, 2009 at 9:42 pm
We wash the dog a lot, for he smells. I also try to keep the dirty laundry behind a closed door.
108 Lori // Oct 11, 2009 at 8:17 am
If time allows, I clean the bathroom and the kitchen sink. If I’m really in a rush, I’ll spray Febreeze and turn the lights down low.
109 Lethea Benson // Oct 11, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I try to sweep and vacuum regularly and anytime the weather permits I like to line dry my sheets, smells like heaven!

A clean home is love to me.Kids, cats ,dogs and a hamster doen’t not make a clean smelling house! Vacuum, mopping and wiping down surfaces is not enough. Sitting back ,I know it clean but I want more! I want the scent of a clean house, making it a home. Thats where Febreze come in ,with so many different scents to choose from ,everyone has their favorite and now I have a clean home and a happy family!
112 Jeannette // Oct 12, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Um I spray the smelly stuff right into my air vents. The paint is melting off the vent now and looks horrible. I do, however, have a free outlet that is very lonely…….

I love you but I refuse to use a scent thing (what are they called? Oh AIR FRESHENERS, right) that has to be plugged in. Too many things are plugged in already. My personal favorite air freshening thing is the Votivo candle in Oceano. It smells divine!
Anyway, I just wanted to say YOU ARE SO PRETTY and I bet you smell fabulous.

Also a big fan of the Noticeables, but agree that the refillable price tag is a wee bit steep. I like the lavender/vanilla

120 Jennie // Oct 13, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Our house smells like BBQ, or Bacon, or whatever my husband cooked last. Candles, etc are vital.

I cheat and have a cleaning service once a month to do a real deep-cleaning – then I just have to try and maintain it!
122 Gina // Oct 14, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Swiffering my hardwood floors every day is a must! Especially with 2 dogs…
123 Lis // Oct 15, 2009 at 1:56 pm
I put vacuum beads from Resoration Hardware into my vacuum. I use the “Lemon Meyer” scent and it works well to cover up the smell of dog hair. Dog hair is usually the reason that I vacuum. The other thing I do is enlist my 5-year-old to hang up his coat, put his shoes on the rack, and put his toys away when he’s done playing. I don’t always put away MY messes, but having his picked up does a lot for an apparently organized house!
124 carrie // Oct 15, 2009 at 9:21 pm
I pick up the toys and put the kids to bed!
125 Mindy Case // Oct 18, 2009 at 1:47 am

126 Kelly Ann T. // Oct 18, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I wash the sheets and bedding every week. I also vacuum and mop often. With two big dogs and an active family the floors need to be clean.
127 Lara // Oct 18, 2009 at 3:03 pm
I would love to share the Febreze love!
To maintain the appearance of a clean home: always make the beds. Even if everything else is messy, a made bed makes the room look clean. And nothing messes up a clean room faster than an unmade bed.
Vacuum once a day to get rid of footsteps, empty all trash cans, and use a paper towel with a spritz of Windex on all faucets to get rid of water spots. To make the place smell nice, throw a wedge of a citrus fruit in the garbage disposal!
128 Alexandrea M // Oct 18, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I use a hepa pet hair specific vacuum cleaner, and also febreeze to deal with pet odor, it doesn’t help with the litter smell but everything else in my house smells great!
129 Lauren L // Oct 19, 2009 at 11:10 am
Sounds like these things work! I could use something to better mask Simba’s litter odor now that he’s no longer allowed outside (increase in age and blindness inversely proportional to growth of coyote population).
I make sure I pick up living room clutter and clean kitchen counters. Been using candles for smells – would love some Febreze!
130 Christy // Oct 20, 2009 at 12:24 pm
During nice weather months we laeave all the windows open to get fresh air through the house and use a whole house fan. We live in the mid-west and do not have air conditioning!
131 Allison // Oct 20, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Trying to keep a house clean with three boys AND a husband can be hard so I try to take out the trash daily, keep the floor swept and the dirty, stinky dishes clean!
132 Connie // Oct 21, 2009 at 4:35 am
Open windows and a clean toilet. Good ‘nuf.
133 julie // Oct 22, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I light candles!
134 Linda Stewart // Oct 22, 2009 at 1:37 pm
I clean on a regular basis. By clean I mean more than just a pickup. I deep clean. I also keep the trash emptied. With a baby and toddler in the house it’s imperative that the trash get taken out daily. I also refuse to allow laundry to build up. I do, on average 2 loads every day. I also keep plug ins in the higher outlets so the boys can’t reach and/or I burn nice light smelling candles.
135 Randy Bailey // Oct 22, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I use the citrus scented cleaners and air fresheners, they seem to have longer staying power than other scents. Soon, since the holidays R coming up I change my air freshener 2 those apple cinnamon cones
136 Linda V // Oct 22, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I like the fresh rain scents, but the fall scents sound very intersting to try for this time of year.
137 Josh // Oct 23, 2009 at 9:40 pm
I like my space to be clean, but I’m usually too lazy to actually, you know, clean. I got some scented candles a few months ago but they’re too messy and a little dangerous. I’m sure these scents will be great for that fresh clean air smell.
138 gabrielle // Oct 23, 2009 at 11:12 pm
I sweep every day and use an air freshener by the litter box. With 6 cats and a farting dog, we can use all the air freshening we can get.
139 Milissa // Oct 24, 2009 at 2:23 pm
When I have the time, I will clean my house from top to bottom…It is such a good feeling of accomplishment to know that everything is fresh and clean. But when I am in a hurry, a quick sweep of the vacum and a little air freshener will have to do!
140 Pam in Missouri // Oct 24, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Cleaning the dogs’ beds always makes a huge difference. How can 2 mammals be so darn stinky?
141 Anne G // Oct 26, 2009 at 9:09 am
the biggest thing I do to keep my home staying fresh is keeping on top of chores. If the kitchen garbage goes out every night and the cat box gets cleaned every few days things stay smelling fresh. When I let stuff slide is when I have issues.

I have a sort of sick obsession with scrubbing surfaces and keeping things tidy. Except for the bedroom. The rest of the house can be spotless but the bedroom is always a mess of creativity, clothes, books, and sticky notes.
When at another persons’ house for dinner or a movie night, I will be the one that cleans up. I can’t resist. Its sick. I am a sick human being.
I clean with pine sol because I like the pretty, pretty smell. I also burn candles because I worked for Hallmark and the yankee discount was amazing. Favorite scents? Sparkling Pine, Dune Grass, and Macintosh Spice. Oh, and Autumn Fruit.
I like things to smell pleasant and welcoming. Not sterile or “fresh”. But that I want you in my home. I want you to think I am baking a delicious pie. When in all actuality, I will have twinkies artfully arranged on a plate.
An air freshener unit would be nice. And a lot less dangerous than candles burning. I’ve never forgotten to blow one out before but that is my fear. I leave the house and repeatedly ask myself if all flames were extinguished. What about the one in the bathroom? What if my hosue burns down? What if the cat walk by a dying flame and it strikes back up because of the wind?
I wish I was kidding. But. I am not.

I try to keep the kitchen clean without any odors- if I smell any then I will tear the place apart til I find it and I like to throw open the windows and doors if its not too cold

Airing out the apartment is key to keeping things fresh. Well, that & tossing the hot hammer of sheer will down upon clutter. Candles are nice, too.

I invite my mother over at least once a month to go to lunch and shop. That always puts me in a Friday evening frenzy of cleaning – because she totally does a walk around looking in all the rooms when she’s here.
148 Leona B // Oct 27, 2009 at 1:22 pm
I love to open all of the windows and let the fresh air in. Spring and fall are my favorite when the breeze can blow in all day! I also like to use Febreeze on all of the sort furnishings. Keeping the dishes done and the taking the trash trash out nightly also keeps things smelling good. I also like scented candles and plug ins.
