It WAS delivery! And it’s DiGiorno!

I cannot think of one person who doesn’t love pizza. In fact, I believe it’s pretty safe to say that Love for Pizza is one of the few things that ties humankind together. For example, Love for Pizza is the only thing I have in common with both Tyra Banks and Heidi Montag! (Disclaimer: I’m simply assuming that Tyra and Heidi love pizza. I have zero hard evidence.)

When I was asked to review DiGiorno’s 200 Calorie Pizza, there was no way I could turn it down. When my family strolls down the pizza aisle at the grocery store, nine times out of ten we go straight to the DiGiornos. (Full disclosure: The other one time out of ten is reserved for Palermo, because I love the ultra-thin crust. Wait. Do you smell that? It’s called Foreshadowing.) Anyway, last week the mail truck pulled up and out popped the mailman carrying a box marked “PERISHABLE. THIS SIDE UP.” I ran out and noticed that my curious neighbor was standing by her mailbox. She raised her eyebrows at me as if to say, “What’s in the box?”  I smiled and yelled, “Termite farm!” before wrapping my arms around my box of frozen pizzas and sprinting full speed into my house.

Before I go any further, I need to share something with you. I absolutely hate the way portion sizes are advertised. Specifically, I hate popping open a tiny can of soup that has a label boasting “100 calories per serving” only to find out that there are three servings in that tiny can! I constantly feel like I’m being duped by the companies who claim they want their consumers to be healthy!

Now, let me say this: DiGiorno’s 200 Calorie Pizzas are individually wrapped. In other words, you don’t have to cut the rectangular slice of pizza into eighths to achieve the 200 calorie goal you were shooting for. And the good news? The serving size is Very Good. It’s about the size of my hand, and I have big silly piano hands.

cheese&tomato

DiGiorno currently has three flavors of the 200 Calorie Pizzas—Cheese and Tomato, Pepperoni, and Chicken with Peppers and Onions. The first pizza I tried was Cheese and Tomato, and it instantly reminded me of those ultra-thin crust pizzas I tend to crave. Eureka! The crust is crispy and super thin, the tomatoes deliver a tangy sweetness, and the amount of cheese is perfect—it doesn’t really stretch from the plate to your mouth like you see in pizza commercials, but as a healthy alternative? It definitely works.

Next up? Pepperoni. Honestly, I cannot remember the last time I ate pepperoni pizza. For some reason, my brain associates Pepperoni with Horribly Unhealthy. However, knowing that the DiGiorno 200 Calorie Pizza is, well, 200 calories, I didn’t feel quite so guilty about digging in. After cooking the pepperoni pizza in my toaster oven for about 14 minutes, my entire house smelled like a pizzaria. Excellent. I found this pizza to be a little salty, but that’s only because I’m not accustomed to eating pepperoni. Paired up with apple slices on the side? Perfect lunch.

My favorite pizza was the Chicken with Peppers and Onions. For some reason, it just felt healthy to me. Good healthy—not cardboard pizza healthy. The crust? Again, it’s very thin and crispy. The chicken? Perfectly grilled white meat. The bell peppers and onions? I guess it would be easy to go overboard with the vegetables since they’re super low in calories, BUT, DiGiorno didn’t cop out like that. The vegetable/meat ratio was a good one. (Can you tell I don’t review food very often? I’m finding myself wanting to type: Mmmmmm. Gooood pizza. And perhaps that’s all you really need!)

chickenpepperonion

To sum it all up: Yes. I will definitely be buying more of the DiGiorno’s 200 Calorie Pizzas and recommending them to anyone who wants something much more satisfying than a rice cake balancing a slice of tomato. You will not be disappointed. AND, because I like you just as much as I like pizza, I shall now turn this review into a giveaway! Leave a comment telling me the pizza flavor you would love to see offered in a 200 calorie version, and on February 22 the random number generator will choose one of you to win a $200 Visa gift card! Edited to add: A winner has been selected and notified! Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions!

Be sure to check out the other reviews! You have nine chances to win!

I’m gonna go with spinach and roasted garlic.

Also, I know one person who doesn’t like pizza. He’s five, and he’s mine.

  • 10 Jen // Jan 25, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Our fam fave is a chicken spinach & feta job with loads of olives. Have been working on perfecting the homemade crust for awhile not but your promise of thin & crispy makes me think this might be worth trying..

  • 11 magpie // Jan 25, 2010 at 9:08 pm

onions and peppers is my hands down favorite. also a sentimental favorite – it was my mother’s pick.

  • 12 Terrill // Jan 25, 2010 at 9:16 pm

hawiian! (pineapple and canadian bacon, for those of you who, tragically, have not heard of this combination.)

  • 14 Alison // Jan 25, 2010 at 9:18 pm

    I’ll vote spinach & mushrooms!

  • 15 Carroll // Jan 25, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Clam and garlic, white sauce, thin crust = pizza nirvana.

And hey, while we’re all here…among the several/many things that have made me ponder more than necessary in life (Why do they call it a grapefruit? Does ANY part of that thing actually remind someone of grapes?) is the question “Who the heck is that ‘Pete’ person we keep talking about? (As in “Oh, for Pete’s sake!” and “For the love of Pete!”) Thanks to this post, Angie, I am going to hereby suggest we change that last one to “For the love of pizza!” I mean, OK, aside from Elizabeth’s weird kid (which, hey, is really no more weird than the fact that I raised one to adulthood who for some completely unfathomable reason STILL does not like ice cream!) it’s pretty much a universal truth. Far easier to understand than “For the love of Pete!”

“For the love of pizza!” it is — I hereby so proclaim!

Hop on the bandwagon with me, FP readers — plenty of room up here, and, believe me, it’s not moving fast :-)

  • 25 Beth Fish // Jan 25, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Pineapple? I was addicted to pineapple pizza during my first pregnancy and never quite got over it, but I seem to no longer be pregnant and able to eat with abandon. Real bummer, that.

  • 26 patois // Jan 25, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Coral’s goat cheese and sun-dried tomato sounds great. If I can’t pick one that someone else already used, then pronounce it to-mah-to.

You know what I’d love? Something loaded with veggies, but NOT peppers & onions. Like mushrooms & black olives. I’d also probably buy anything with garlic on it, too.

Also, when I stop at the grocery store this week I’ll be looking for these. I could use a nice 200 calorie pizza in my life.

  • 34 evilsciencechick // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:11 pm

I like a white pizza with spinach, tomato, and feta!

  • 35 Nichole // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:12 pm

  • 38 brit // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:30 pm

    canadian bacon and pineapple….

  • 39 Mitzi // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:52 pm

I usually make homemade pizza about once a month. One of them is always pepperoni and on half of that pepperoni is either my pickled jalapenos or banana peppers. The other is usually hamburger and onion, sometimes mushrooms.

If I’m going out for pizza and I get to pick…then I would choose something with feta, artichokes, and mushrooms.

  • 40 Meghan // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:52 pm

mmmmmm, I’m a fan of Hawaiian pizza (pineapple and ham/Canadian bacon) but I think a pesto sauce with spinach and garlic would be divine. Yes, divine.

  • 42 Lynn @ human, being // Jan 26, 2010 at 12:37 am

A pizza chain here makes a special called the Barney Fife. I don’t know why it’s called that, but it’s delicious: a white pizza (olive oil sauce) with grilled chicken, garlic and tomatoes and mozerella cheese.

  • 46 Betsy // Jan 26, 2010 at 8:18 am

It looks like they already make the one I’d like best – cheese and tomato – but aside from that, probably something with mushrooms.

  • 83 JustLinda // Jan 26, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I know this sounds boring, super uper Vanilla-Ice Cream boring – but cheese. Just plain cheese. No, not cheese with little tomatoes on it.

Oh, I have nothing against tomatoes. Truly, I don’t. I love them! Fruit? Vegetable? Who cares! Love them!!

But I have a child. An overweight child who is on a calorie controlled food plan. And I know that in itself is all “ACK!” controversial and everything. I don’t want my kid to be different but, people, we’re playing the hand we were dealt here.

So what I’m saying is that I need CHEESE PIZZA. Because pizza is her favorite food but not with tomatoes or pepper or onions or anything – only plain cheese. Kid friendly AND healthy!! It would work on her little custom food plan and it would make us BOTH happy.

  • 84 Amy // Jan 26, 2010 at 2:48 pm
