A few months ago, I called Jeff and said, “I think I would like to have a laptop. A little laptop.” I went on to explain that although I really love the iPod Touch he gave me a few years back, it’s just too small (in my opinion) to really accomplish anything other than listening to music and shooting up quick Twitter updates.
Last week, this box came in the mail.
The Viliv S5 is a 4.8″ touchscreen media-on-the go device powered by the Intel® Atom™ processor. (Intel builds processors, or the “brains” of your PC. The Intel® Atom™ processor has been designed to be smaller and more power efficient, enabling you to get pocket-sized devices with full PC functionality.) Because of the small size (it’s larger than an iPhone, but much smaller than the average laptop—it’s like the super-awesome Jan Brady of portable PCs!) the Viliv S5 allows you to take your music, HD movies, work stuff, digital photos and more with you wherever you go. Because of the 3G or WiFi connectivity options, the Viliv S5 gives you a full internet computing experience and a long battery life. (In other words: It weighs less than a pound, it’s totally cute, and bang! It’s a fully functioning PC that is now available at Amazon for $499+!)
Okay. May I confess a few things to you? My computer knowledge is very limited, as you could probably guess after reading the highly cut and pasted previous paragraph. In fact, whenever I have to call any sort of tech hotline for support (which is rare, thank God), I always start off the conversation by saying, “Hi. My name is Angela, and I need you to talk to me like I’m in the first grade. My (insert gadget name here) isn’t working, and I’m three inches away from crying.” Because of my limited knowledge and my general lack of time, I need equipment that will turn on and work with absolutely no fiddly action from me.
On the No Fiddly Action from Me scale, I rate the Viliv S5 an 8 out of 10. When I turn it on, Windows XP pops up, and I can immediately access the internet. Best of all, the connection is Whoosh! super fast. Obviously, you need to be at a place where WiFi is available, but I predict the universe will have WiFi before too much longer. (I say this because I was able to sit in the parking lot at Dairy Queen and access the internet on Miss Viliv as I went nuts on a Chocolate Covered Cherry Blizzard. The world keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?)
The Viliv S5 holds a GPS antenna, meaning you can install mapping software and transform the pocket PC into a fully functioning GPS unit with touch screen capabilities. And some of the online videos showcasing this function are pretty amazing.
When you look at the Viliv, you might notice that it doesn’t have a keyboard. But wait! It does!
It’s a haptic-feedback onscreen keyboard, which is a fancy way of telling you that the unit vibrates a bit when you touch the keys. The touchscreen is super-responsive and the keyboard is very easy to use—even if you have larger-than-average fingers. When a key is pressed, it turns blue and lifts up. Excellent. AND, because of the bluetooth capabilities, if you aren’t thrilled with the haptic-feedback keyboard, you can easily use a bluetooth wireless keyboard. (I’m starting to sound fancy, aren’t I? High five!)
Last night I took Miss Viliv to the local coffee joint so I could browse the internet, create a Christmas card list, and listen to Christmas music. Mission accomplished. PLUS, I was approached by three latte swilling cool kids who found Miss Viliv to be quite fetching.
Did I just hear you say that you want a Viliv S5, too? Well, let’s see what we can do about that! Leave a comment telling me how you could use mobile technology like the Viliv S5 during the holiday season. (Be sure to leave a working e-mail address!) On December 30th, I’ll let the random number generator choose one lucky person to win a Viliv S5! Isn’t this exciting?! Yes. It is.

This would be oh so helpful in keeping track of Christmas gift lists and checking for the best store prices while on the go.

I’m the only person I know who doesn’t have web-browsing on my phone, and won’t be getting it anytime soon (we’re downgrading after our 2-year agreement expires next year to pre-paid phones to save money).. so having a portable PC would be perfect! I’d use it to stay updated when I’m on the go… since I can’t otherwise! :)
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Nice toy. Perfect Christmas gift for me. :0)
5 Elizabeth // Dec 8, 2009 at 5:44 pm
I have a desktop PC, and my phone doesn’t have web browsing capabilities, so when I’m out I feel lost! When I go away for Christmas I’ll be at the mercy of others to share their devices. This would make my life so much easier!

This would be so wonderful for me to be able to keep up with my family that lives 1100 miles away, during the holidays. I would love it!
8 Janet // Dec 8, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Well, I’d use the device to work on my law school studies, but I would totally do it with a eggnog latte at my local coffee shop (which is how law students celebrate the holiday season).
9 Mindy // Dec 8, 2009 at 11:30 pm
I’d use this to take Christmas music with me wherever I go and I’d use the GPS to take a nice holiday vacation! :o) Sounds like a plan!

Hmmmm…maybe I could use it to look for a job this holiday season – since my gift-buying will be rather modest!

I’d give this to my hardworking on the go daughter, so could keep in touch!

We are a young family (us and two boys) trying to break the cycle of debt by putting any and all extra money onto our student loans. Needless to say, our stockings are going to be a little limp this year.
My husband works two jobs and goes to school nights to make this possible and I would love the chance to show my gratitude for all of his sacrifice by putting this little beauty in his stocking. It would rock his world!

I’d love to have this for holiday travel. I love having a laptop with me all the time, but sometimes a regular laptop is too bulky to stuff into our car. Yes, we pack for a week long stay with the family, so the car is pretty packed. I’d use this to keep up with blog and email reading mostly!

I would give it to my wonderful husband. We don’t really have extra money for grown-up gifts this year. He would absolutely love this!
22 Betsy // Dec 9, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Want it! Oh my goodness, this is just what I need when I visit my inlaws. If I break out my laptop, they always, ALWAYS want to see what I’m doing and sometimes even sit down and watch me as I and read over my shoulder, you know, read blogs and see what Bai Ling’s wearing and all of that stuff I might do as a little break from 5 solid days of in-law socializing. (I love them! I do!) But I feel like this is small enough that it might discourage that kind of team-blogreading. Plus, I’m always working from coffee shops since I have an office w/o a window, and my shoulder would be very grateful. Whew!

This would be a nice gift for my mom, who confesses limited knowledge of computers, but manages to post daily updates on what my dad eats anyway on a google doc for us kids to see.
25 Angella // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I think I’d give it to the kids to play with to give me and my hubby some alone time. Ahem.

What a neat gadget! I get lost a lot — having GPS capability would help! And who doesn’t need Google at their fingertips at all times? I know I do—and obviously not just during the holiday season. :)
27 Alison Melanson // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:05 pm
First, why are all those girls wearing crop tops to sell a computer? Nevermind!

I would love to give this to my husband who has been drooling over it. That is now I would use technology..to make my husband happy…
34 Don // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:31 pm
I could really use this as a gift for my wonderful wife as I have noooo money!!!
35 Carroll // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:35 pm
What? Advanced technology?? But I barely even know how to retrieve messages on my cel phone…if I remember to have it turned on at all, that is.
Easy, you say?
Feh! Not likely!!
It would take me at least a month, instruction manual in one hand, to figure out even the most basic features on something like that, so using it during *these* holidays would be out of the question.
But next year?
Let me count the ways…
By then I could have all the lists from 43 years’ worth of annual tree trimming parties well-organized and up-dated for shopping and prep-process efficiency.
I would not get lost driving to remote destinations for my annual post-party cookie plate drop-offs.
But most appealing of all…the ability to whip out such amazingly advanced technology in the presence of my two mom-skeptic tech-savvy sons and say knowledgeably “Here, let me just look that up real quick on my spiffy little viliv!”?
Priceless!
36 Stephanie // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Boy! I’d love to use that to make an awesome Christmas card that doesn’t require a hot glue gun. I tend to go overboard on the card assembly, but feel like I could make a great digital one if only I had a laptop, some wireless internet, a cup of coffee, and time away from my toddler.
37 Kelly // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:41 pm

This would be so great to play with! I’m testing out a Dell Latitude 2100 mini-pc right now. Maybe I could hook both of them up to the computer version of a monster truck sled pulling thing and see who wins? BTW – The 2100 has one of them Atom processors in it, too. For the record, I don’t like the name. Atom. Sounds wimpy.
41 Deb on the Rocks // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Wow. I think you’ve got the right idea, use it to help one have cougar appeal with the young pups in coffee shops. That and not losing my mind at boring business parties by hiding under the coats with it.
42 stephanie // Dec 9, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Very cool! They keep coming up with new stuff all the time. I would LOVE something like that.
43 Marianne // Dec 9, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Oh my goodness. We don’t have a laptop, so I would use this a TON travelling to see family over the holidays. I would use it to send pictures of our little girl’s first Christmas to family members that can’t be with us as well.
44 Danielle // Dec 9, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Oh man! Cute towne! I would use it to send e-cards to family because I am LAZY and my real at home computer is broken, so if I don’t get it nobody gets holiday greetings. And would you really want to be responsible for that?
45 Emily J // Dec 9, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Oh man. This would be awesome for holiday travels, since we head out of town to visit family at various locations every year (I’ve gotten good at booking multiple destination itineraries!) I usually cave and end up dragging along a laptop, but then have trouble getting online (in-laws are still on dialup, for example) and it’s too big to stick in my purse and have handy when we hit a coffee shop with wifi.
46 Corinne // Dec 9, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Ooh, how cool! We will be traveling with our 3-year-old for her first-ever Christmas with her Scottish grandparents, and my family would love to get some pictures on Christmas day of their only granddaughter! Plus it’s just really, really cool, and I could hide it from my husband so he wouldn’t steal it. :-) Fingers crossed!

I really wanted to get a laptop to replace the almost 10 year-0ld computer, but the dh decided that we still need a desktop. Razzen-frazzen, grrr. Maybe, just maybe, I’d get some stuff done having portability (walking away from the internet, granted, would help, too.).

64 Lori // Dec 9, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I would love this little gizmo! And I would use it for Christmas songs over the holidays. I’m sure my wireless speaker system would do the job to fill my home with the Christmas spirit, in a joyful, musical kind of way. I also think my high school class of yearbook students would LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!
65 Gail // Dec 9, 2009 at 5:29 pm
I would love a Viliv. I can imagine now sitting in the living room with my knitting and thinking of something to add to my Christmas shopping list and being able to check Amazon right then instead of trying to remember what it was when I finally get out to the computer.
I’ve been hoping to get away from my desktop computer but spending the money on a laptop or netbook is just out of the question right now and paying the extra to get internet on my phone is also not going to happen.
66 Shera // Dec 9, 2009 at 5:42 pm

I’m having to start traveling for work more often, leaving my 11 month old with dad. We have one laptop we use to Skype with grandparents, but I need it for work, so what to do when I’m out of town? This would be the perfect solution! I can keep in touch with boy and daddy, and this and will keep the grandparents from coming after us with pitchforks for not being able to see the baby!
74 erika // Dec 9, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Ooh, how fun! I’ve been thinking that a tiny laptop is just what was missing from my life. I picture myself bringing it to my parents’ house for Christmas and using it to fact-check my tall-tale husband’s stories. ;)
75 Mary // Dec 9, 2009 at 6:37 pm
The last “new” technology I had was a used HP ipaq. the wireless card didn’t work and that nearly broke my heart. It was still the BEST for obsessive listmaking and keeping track of life. When it suddenly died for no reason, I nearly did too. I can’t even how this thing would change my life. Maybe I wouldn’t get lost just trying to get across town?

I know this is totally a first world problem, but I have a hard time pulling out the big laptop with a baby at home. You’d think it would be easy: pull out of case, plug in, turn on, type with two hands. Yeah, not so much with a six month old. As a matter of fact, the only reason I’m able to type this comment is because she’s having a very rare moment of not flailing. She definitely wants me to win this thing. It would make checking email, doing internetish things much easier. :)

First & foremost… I love your writing; so catchy!
Okay, on to the good stuff: I am a modern mom on the go, but dragging the laptop around isn’t precisely the best way to keep up-to-date. I would love one of these things. I’m not only the mom who drives my daughter to karate, tap, ballet, jazz, gymnastics and swimming, but I’m also a mom blogger & karate event coordinator… this would help me be better organized (and look a bit more hip, too!)
Let’s face it… Blackberry’s are good, but this thing? Even better. I would love the opportunity to win it and be proud to put it to good use!

I need this little baby to stay portable and productive between job sites.
103 Nicki // Dec 10, 2009 at 7:25 am
As a single mother of a teen and a tween, I would love any gizmo or gadget that promises to make my life easier. We spend LOADS of time out and about, the library, etc. And it would make my life so special to not have to carry my laptop EVERYWHERE. I don’t think it was meant to be an accessory. And my shoulder agrees with me.
104 Jenny // Dec 10, 2009 at 8:20 am
Hmm, let’s see. I’d use it to make sure my husband doesn’t book his office Christmas party on the same day and time his son’s flight is scheduled to arrive, perform my mother’s many requests to please e-mail my sister and tell her blah blah blah, and to keep track of the hundreds of extra, piddly-ass projects my boss seems to think I have time for on top of everything else I have to do. While I’m at it, I might just use this handy little device to research ways to torture my teenage stepchildren … cause a girl needs some stress relief once in a while.
105 Betsy // Dec 10, 2009 at 8:21 am
Very cool! We’re dinosaurs with only a desktop computer. I’d use this out and about…grocery lists, shopping lists, gps, surfing the web…and at home…snuggled up in bed after a long day of running the world for my 5 boys. (4 little, 1 big ;) )
106 Anne // Dec 10, 2009 at 8:56 am
Wow, how cool!
I would love to have a pocket PC for GPS and for shopping lists and such. My lazy-self would also like to surf the web from the couch, without having to get up and walk ALL THE WAY TO THE COMPUTER.
107 Meghank // Dec 10, 2009 at 8:58 am
I would def. keep up on my holiday lists and plans for 2010. It would be great for the GPS alone….my husband could def. use that!
108 Kaitlin // Dec 10, 2009 at 9:00 am
I’d be able to price check and comparison shop WHILE being out shopping! Half the time, I’m standing in the middle of a store calling my husband to look something up online for me :)
109 Denita // Dec 10, 2009 at 9:23 am
I would use the fun little device for checking prices and finding stores around town that actually have the product in-stock since that seems to be an on-going problem for me. Then when the holiday spirit had left me, I would look up something funny on U-tube and laugh and laugh and laugh and go on my merry little way.
110 Lisa Montgomery // Dec 10, 2009 at 9:28 am
I could use it to keep track of my Christmas budget as I actually deplete that budget. Oh, and it would be great to use for grocery shopping lists for all those dinner parties I will be hosting! I always write out a list and forget to bring it into the store. I wouldn’t forget this little gem!
111 Angela // Dec 10, 2009 at 10:34 am

This would certainly help with Christmas shopping on the go!! Would love, love, love to win one!!
113 amber // Dec 10, 2009 at 10:42 am
This would be AMAZING. For my job, I constantly need to be online. So when I travel, like for the holidays, I have to lug my big heavy laptop with me. That’s sort of a vacation-kill, ya know? Yet using the internet on my cellphone doesn’t work either, because I can’t access files and the screen is far too small. So this would be awesome for me!! I would love to take this with me to my mom’s this Christmas, that way I have email, internet, and files all within reach and don’t have to clunk my laptop around with me. I love the sleek style of this Viliv too, it’s cute and practical. Thanks so much for the chance!!

124 Sakina // Dec 10, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Oh, please, please, please, please, pretty please pick me. I want a friend I can put in my pocket. I promise to pet, water, feed and charge her whenever she needs it. I would even be willing to croon lullabies to her and post mock-worthy video of myself doing so on you tube while doing so if that might help my chances. My phone doesn’t have access to the interwebs, and I’m not really in a position to buy a new phone–I also have no sense of direction and need to keep my life organized. Also, if this helps, I NEED this to keep my business life organized and can’t afford a crackberry. I work for a company that provides in home nursing care to medically fragile infants. You can’t be providing better service than that, now can you? Please, please, pretty please? Oh, and Merry Christmas!

I just sent out an email to the family of our times and places in which we will be on Christmas; 9-12 MIL’s house, 12-4:30 my grandparents house and 5-? my aunt’s house! When I complain about having to go so many places my aunt says to be thankful I have so many people to spend Christmas with! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I own virtually nothing technological, my phone I don’t even know how to text with and my camera is a discarded one from my husband. That is it. No MP3, no GPS, no video. I could use this to find my way to a store, not overload on mall stimuli by listening to the soothing soundtrack of the Charlie Brown Christmas, and then ignore my children on the flight to their grandparents’ house by watching Pride and Prejudice (what doesn’t Mr. Darcy improve?) Oh, then I could get organized afterward.

I typed a comment about my recently shattered laptop screen and my defection from Twitter-land (right before it became super cool) and how I really would love to win this thing, even more than anything on my lame-o Christmas list prepared under duress. It self destructed. This is the Cliff’s Notes version. (Yeah, I talk a lot!)
Please, random number picker thingy, pick me! :)

I would use it to taunt the latte-swilling teenagers at the local coffeeshop. Wait a minute. That’s not the right spirit. Let’s start over, shall we? I would use it to spread peace, love, and joy throughout the holiday season and all year long.
225 Helloheather // Dec 16, 2009 at 9:40 am
A machine this teeny and cute would fit great in my purse or diaper bag, and let me keep up with my Christmas shopping list on Google Docs. I share the list with my husband, who does his share of the shopping on his lunch breaks. It would be great to keep each other up to date so easily!
226 Leah // Dec 16, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I’d use this to store photos, so I could take them around to my grandparents’ houses at Christmas and allow them to see how much my son has grown while they’ve been busy NOT seeing pictures of him on their non-existant computers.
227 Christie // Dec 16, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I’d use it to either keep track of the gifts for each kid, or to give to the oldest as a really cool gift.

Ok, I’d love this – it would easily take the place of the old, rather cumbersome, occasionally really cantankerous laptop, which I use for everything. So, how would I use this? Email, shopping, facebooking, limited games use for the boy – everything I already use the decrepit laptop for now!
239 Michelle // Dec 17, 2009 at 9:25 am
Oh, the uses…mobile, organized and effective Christmas list (instead of my current crazy post-it notes system, which of course get lost and stuck to things they shouldn’t and therefore leave me feeling disorganized and batty) and holiday card addresses are at the top of MY list.
240 Colleen // Dec 17, 2009 at 11:23 am

I might also use it during my lunch break at work (but never during the workday, hiding in a bathroom stall to update my Facebook status, because that would be weird, and also shhh), and to tweet about how I am hiding in a bathroom stall at work.

During the holidays I would use this to help entertain my almost five year old. Our family demographic skews rather geriatric right now and he gets overwhelmed by all the adults at times (he is the only kid on either side with the exception of his baby sister but she is too little to be of help right now)! He would love a chance to go hide for a bit and play PBS kids (after Christmas it would be mine, all mine mwah ha ha).

Oh wow1 With the Viliv S5 I could organize all my customers and friends to send cards to. Keeping them in separate categories and such. I could also organize my Christmas gift exchange lists and Christmas gifts for family and friends list. Best of all I could use the GPS to get us to our destinations during the holidays and the keyboard to type up a journal of our travels. & then, let my son use it to get his research paper done. No excuse on why he couldn’t do research! What a great tech gadget! So many ways to stay connected!

I am trying hard to de-clutter my home and live better with less stuff. Something like this would allow my family to get rid of our rarely used desktop PC, which is barely functional and circa 1999. I would love to have something this efficient and it would save so much room in our living room! I could use that space for healthy things, like yoga and meditation and drinking.

Hmmm. I’m afraid that I would need to use the Viliv S5 for Nefarious Purposes.
Say, for example, that I was in a Radio Shack at the mall. If that Radio Shack was playing christmas music that I disagreed with, I would first check to see if any of their computers was NOT properly secured, via WiFi and Bluetooth (both of which the swanky Viliv S5 supports).
If one (or more) of the computers was not properly secured, it would be quite simple to transfer a copy of Black Sabbath’s “Crazy Train” to the computer(s) and start it playing.
“Crazy Train” is far more festive than “Jingle Bell Rock” anyway.

This would have saved my butt several times over the Holiday.
Like, not having to visit the mall to shop, but rather doing it online on my lunch break (read: under my desk when the boss wasn’t around), keeping track of the lists I was buying off of, and for sure that one time I tried to go to the mall a few cities away to get my mom a wallet (that I could have ordered online on my lunch!) but had nothing but a MapQuest and took a wrong turn and had no internetty GPS thing and had to ask the weird gas station lady. I would have really liked it then.
326 Wendy // Dec 29, 2009 at 11:36 pm
Seriously the coolest thing ever and now I feel like a fool for covering the iPod Touch all holiday season! No lie, I’m pretty sure I’d just use it to keep myself sane around the holidays when visiting the hometown. The lack of WiFi in the town of 20,000 might be a problem, but I think I’d manage!
327 Amelia // Dec 29, 2009 at 11:38 pm
So, here’s the deal. I’m a birth doula and a traditional midwifery student. The idea of having a handy dandy little pal like this with me at births to look things up instead of having to page through books is beyond exciting for me. And over the holidays it would have been particularly handy to have access to my email while I was celebrating the holiday with my family. I was waiting on a client to go into labor and decided to stay home so that I could be easily reached. With this little handy dandy gadget, I totally could have taken my methods of contact with me!

I would use it to stay in touch with family that live far away!

I would keep knitting patterns on it, of course. :)

My iBook’s screen went kaput and I don’t have the cash to replace it.
I would keep my recipes on it!

I would LOVE a laptop too, but just think they’re too big for my internet uses…this seems PERFECT…Pick me, pick me!

This looks great! Sign me up. I didn’t even know this thing, or its sisters, existed. So handy-looking.

I would use mobile technology like the Viliv S5 to broadcast, communicate, and keep in touch with friends and family when I’m out and about and away from my desktop computer. I’d use it as a GPS device to keep from getting lost wherever I might be going … I’d keep myself entertained playing games on it while waiting for appointments, and the list goes on. There are so many possibilities for a nifty gadget like this :) *Thanks* for the giveaway!

What a wonderful little thing, I can carry it around in my tote bag! I always feel unproductive & lazy on my bus commute but I could use this to check my emails and pay bills before my work day really starts! I could also avoid uncomfortable conversations at holiday parties that are getting a little boring by pretending I have some serious work to do. :)

Well, since I don’t have a cell phone this would be my little window into technology!!! I would be able to pay my bills, check my email and stay connected with friends!!

During the holiday season I would use it to look at sales websites as well as watch downloaded Holiday specials. Thanks for the great contest and Happy Holidays :)

I could totally do all of my Christmas shopping while sitting in Starbucks sipping hot cocoa! Very cool product.
