Why can’t you meat us in the middle? Food is love!

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and The Laughing Cow.

Edited to add: Thanks for all of the comments! The lucky winner has been chosen! Congratulations, Debbie!
“You’re a vegetarian? You still eat chicken, right?”

“I know you don’t eat meat. There’s just a little bit of bacon in these green beans, so you should be okay.”

“I made this tray especially for the vegetarians. Ham salad finger sandwiches!”

I learned a long time ago that people tend to show their love with food. When I came home from the hospital after giving birth to Meredith, I was showered with gooey butter cakes and potato casseroles. Every year for my birthday, Jeff takes me out for a huge sushi dinner. When the girls do something extra great at school, we tend to head out for ice cream.

Because there are so many gatherings during the holiday season, the opportunities to show love through food are seemingly endless. Because I’m a vegetarian, I’m considered the wild card of the family. The enigma. People want me to eat. Wait. Let me rework that sentence. People want me to EAT!!! from every dish, and they don’t seem to understand that I’m perfectly happy making a complete meal out of what they consider to be side items. The fact that I don’t fill my plate with half of a chicken or part of a pig is perplexing to some, and maddening to many.

“Just take the day off of the meat thing. You don’t have to be a vegetarian EVERY day of the year! It’s Christmas!”

I must say, because I don’t eat meat, it’s fairly easy to volley my family’s attempts to shower me with often not-so-healthy gobs of food. You see, my family is made up of meat eaters. And I’m 100% okay with that. The turkey bacon pinwheels? I’m not tempted. The huge bowl of dressing with the turkey neck sticking out of the center? It’s easy to pass that one up. (Two words: Turkey Neck.) Because I’ve made a personal promise to not eat the items that contain meat, it’s fairly easy for me to manage my meals during the holidays.

Christmas Egg Casserole
This is the Christmas Egg Casserole I make every Christmas morning for my parents, Jeff’s parents, and Jeff. (You can click on it for the recipe!) It contains a dozen eggs and a pound of sausage. I make it because they love it and I love them, but it really does seem twisted, doesn’t it? I love you, so here’s a pound of sausage and a dozen eggs. Please live forever. Dig in.

I suppose the only part of Christmas dinner that might force me into wearing my Gluttony bandanna would be my dad’s caramel pie. Dad’s caramel pie has a graham cracker crust, a layer of bananas, a thick layer of caramel, whipped topping, and the top is bedecked with chocolate shavings, pecans, and cherries. Caramel pie contains no bacon bits. It’s not made from chicken stock. There is no turkey neck sticking out from the center. Ah, but I have to keep myself under control. With only two pies and twelve hungry lovers of pie, there’s not much room for a pig out. Crisis averted.

How do you manage your portions during those big holiday dinners? Do you not allow yourself to go back for seconds? Do you tell yourself that you won’t eat anything that begins with the letter S? Do you try not to eat anything larger than your own head? Tell me all about it, and on December 28th, the random number generator will choose one of you win a $150 Visa card! Well, recently I got swept up by the idea of joining a meal replacement weight loss program. I just won’t eat normal food! Um, yeah, I know myself better than that. So I won’t be denying myself anything this December, but I will continue to go to the gym 3x/week. Hopefully, that will help me maintain and not gain as I wolf down one more Christmas cookie.

  • 2 Dooley // Dec 8, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I am at a conference in San Francisco, next to an ocean. I have not denied myself any seafood-centric meal option. I may have grown a roll of fat since Monday. Who’s laughing now, laughing cow?

  • 3 kim // Dec 8, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I just devoured five of those chewy peppermints with christmas trees on them (they’re like taffy). Since I did not eat the rest of the bag, I shall call that portion control.

  • 4 December Chowhound // Dec 8, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I make alot of food type of stuff for gifts, so food really is love with me. The good thing about cooking or making the stuff myself, I rarely feel like eating it after I have made it.

The only food that totally tempts me and makes me lose all self control is jelly doughnuts. Seriously.

The month of December is too difficult to keep track of every single thing you put in your face. Next month, I will start keeping better track again.

  • 5 elsimom // Dec 9, 2010 at 10:04 am

If I’m having seconds, I try to make it seconds of vegetables. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. (Also, sometimes the vegetables, with their sauces and cheese sprinkles and all the rest, are not even the healthiest option on the table….)

  • 6 Heather near Atlanta // Dec 9, 2010 at 10:53 am

How do I manage portions during holiday dinners? I remind myself that resolution season is right around the corner! The ladies at Weight Watchers are so friendly in early January! Every year!! (Crisis averted.)

  • 7 Amy // Dec 9, 2010 at 10:56 am

I try to just listen to my body and brain…stop when I’m full!

  • 8 Kara // Dec 9, 2010 at 10:56 am

Manage portions? *looks confused* I’m not entirely sure those words belong together in a sentence when talking about holiday eating.

BUT seriously. I generally just eat until I’m full, then come back later for dessert. My downfall is really the green bean casserole, but my family makes such excellent food for our annual gathering that I taste just a bit of everything.

  • 9 isaida // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:04 am

Portion control – when I’m full, I stop! Exercise – not so much! I hate exercising!

  • 10 Kizz // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:07 am

I have a system that is both foolproof and completely unworkable. I cook.

When I cook the meal I get so into that that by the time it’s all made I’m up for, at most, a taste of each thing and I’m done. Unfortunately when I cook I cook specifically with the holiday leftovers in mind so, while I don’t binge on the day at all, I continue to eat three full plates of holiday goodness a day for a week after and that doesn’t help me at all.

  • 11 Kizz // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:08 am

    I tweeted too: http://twitter.com/Kizzbeth/status/12901328581824513

(Thanks for motivating me to learn how to link to a single tweet. That was easy! Why didn’t I do it sooner?)

  • 12 Jesse // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:11 am

    I avoid dessert. usually. :-)

  • 13 Amy in KC // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:11 am

I try to eat really well right up until I am confronted with a plate of beautiful Christmas cookies. Then all bets are off.

  • 14 Becky // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:21 am

I totally pig out, but I try to fill up on things that are a better choice over cookies, candy, pie, cake, etc ad nauseum. But then I get totally derailed by my MIL potato salad – it’s diced potatoes, fried in bacon grease, and then mixed with copious amounts of crumbled bacon, butter, and green onions. So good.

  • 15 Milissa // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:34 am

As I am a vegetarian too, it it easier to cut down on portions when you can elimnate all the dishes that have meat in them. But sometimes I miss out on the healthy things too….like why does the salad have to have bacon in it? Can’t those who want bacon on their salad just toss it in after it is served? Oh well, there is usually so much food on holidays that I really don’t miss out on anything.

  • 16 Krista // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:42 am

I have TMJ and a splint (to wear at night) but I can also use it as a calorie guard as well–can’t eat well or enjoy it with the plastic thing in my mouth. How’s that for a diversion. No mind games work for me. I am too smart–ha ha ha.

  • 17 Angela // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:49 am

I think of all the starving people in the world and I am suddenly not hungry

  • 18 Erin // Dec 9, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Honestly? Thanksgiving and Christmas are diet-free days. I eat what I want, when I want and only try to stop before I vomit or explode. I eat pretty well the rest of the year so I feel 100% ok splurging on those two days.

  • 19 Caroline // Dec 9, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I must have that caramel pie recipe!

At this time of year, I just try not to lose too much ground. I do avoid minor temptations, and leave room for the gotta-have-its.

  • 20 Julie // Dec 9, 2010 at 1:13 pm

I don’t deny myself any particular food or drink… but I try to keep in mind that the 3rd, 4th, and 5th (etc) bites aren’t going to taste any better than the first few. Seems a little silly, but it helps me eat just one piece of fudge instead of ten.

  • 21 Mary // Dec 9, 2010 at 1:27 pm

I pretend to be a shut-in and avoid socializing.
    : )
Actually, holidays = 1 or 2 days for me so it’s not a big deal. Our families are out of state, I don’t work in an office (with office parties and baked goods etc), so meh. Same deal as usual just different weather.

  • 22 Julie // Dec 9, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I just wear tight pants! When I start feeling uncomfortable, I stop eating for a while. I put the sweatpants away around the holidays so that I will have a constant reminder if I eat too much!

  • 23 Deanna // Dec 9, 2010 at 2:12 pm

I think we need the recipe for that pie!

  • 24 rachel // Dec 9, 2010 at 3:01 pm

I only allow myself a taste of the dishes filled with bacon or cheese etc. and I make sure to fill up on the veggies and drink lots of water. I do most of the cooking for the family and sometimes I just save out some cheese or sausage for the few that really want it instead of putting it in the whole dish.

  • 25 diana // Dec 9, 2010 at 3:27 pm

honestly, i try to eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day, or chose from a limited number of options. i started this back in my weight watchers days, and its great because pretty much by dinner i am hungry but know i have plenty of “points” left to work with. and the next morning i won’t kick off the day with a pound of sausage and a dozen eggs, i have my english muffin with peanut butter!

  • 26 Shera // Dec 9, 2010 at 3:38 pm

It helps to have a family obsessed with taking walks. Eat copious amounts of food, walk, repeat!

  • 27 Tricia // Dec 9, 2010 at 3:50 pm

I do the same thing as Diane. Eat just about the same thing everyday for breakfast and lunch. Also started during my WW days.

  • 28 Angeline // Dec 9, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Ah, family gatherings. Fortunately, we have vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, and low sodium in addition to the omnivores, so everyone pretty much brings what they are willing to eat and it’s all good. And, since my beloved aunt died, we don’t have to make pitchers of bourbon Manhattans…I miss her, but WOW that’s a killer drink.

  • 29 Leah // Dec 9, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I only give away everything I bake – it makes other people happy and prevents me from eating it!

  • 30 treeathie // Dec 9, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    I don’t? Haha. But really, I don’t.

  • 31 Kathy // Dec 9, 2010 at 6:18 pm

I try to only eat one real meal a day. But, honestly, holidays I just try not to gain TOO much weight.

  • 32 Liz // Dec 9, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I’m also a vegetarian, so that helps. I also try to pay attention to when I’m actually hungry or wanting something and if I do that, I self-regulate pretty well. Sometimes you need three pieces of pie and a cookie and a few martinis, but the next day I usually don’t need that all again.

  • 33 Lisa // Dec 9, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I think real hard about not eating to much or packing on the holiday pounds then I eat what I want and feel a bit of guilt and go on with life.

  • 34 Jessica // Dec 9, 2010 at 6:41 pm

No comment on the portion control since I seem to have none lol. But I totally get the vegetarian thing. If I’m ok with “just a little bacon” wouldnt I be ok with eating the whole pig? Thanks for the laughs!

  • 35 Alli // Dec 9, 2010 at 7:02 pm

That looks soooo yummy! I cook fish all the time for my 10 year old, who gave up eating land animals a year ago, and I hate fish! Enjoy your pie this Christmas! Ask your dad to make two this year!

  • 36 Caroline // Dec 9, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Well…I’ve kind of just given up. Let’s just say I decorated for Christmas using candy this year. The plan is to regroup in the new year. Better food choices ahead. That’s what I keep telling myself…

  • 37 kilowatthour // Dec 9, 2010 at 7:49 pm

i have to admit i show no restraint whatsoever when it comes to holiday food. “thirds? why, yes! i do believe i shall!”

thanksgiving was my downfall during the years i was a vegetarian. thanksgiving in MEMPHIS. barbecue is involved. i am weak.

  • 38 Jess // Dec 9, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I’m going to go with your no portion larger than my head idea. Much mote realistic than no larger than my fist.

  • 39 Erica (Crummy Cupcake) // Dec 9, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I must say, it is easier at my in-laws than at *my* folks house because not every single, dingle dish is steeped in memories and joy. (Sometimes I don’t even like some of the dished at the other family gathering. Don’t tell them. Or do. They don’t like me all that much.) Anyhoo – with my family we are preparing the food together, making fewer dishes (only the absolute favorites) reducing the sheer volume and getting up and moving after. It is not a perfect plan, but I am being more mindful as I get older. Happy Holidays to your beautiful clan, my friend.

  • 40 Rachel // Dec 9, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Easy. Each of our families serves only appetizers to compensate for too many heavy holiday feasts that they imagine we must have. It’s all cheese and crackers and no actual meals. By the time New Years rolls around I’m starving.

  • 41 Sal's Girl // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:17 pm

We’re on a low-carb diet the rest of the year so I don’t mind eating during the holidays.

  • 42 velocibadgergirl // Dec 9, 2010 at 11:33 pm

I limit myself to whatever I can fit on one plate, so I get a little bit of everything I want but can’t have too much of it :)

  • 43 Torry // Dec 10, 2010 at 2:04 am

Normal eating rules definitely do NOT apply during the holidays so… I think free-for-all best describes our approach to the Christmas meal!

  • 44 blackbird // Dec 10, 2010 at 7:14 am

I eat like a (wee little) pig.

  • 45 Shelley // Dec 10, 2010 at 9:08 am

I’m pregnant so I plan on eating what I want this year!

  • 46 Caminante // Dec 10, 2010 at 10:44 am

It’s sooo hard for me to manager portions period. Add the Holiday Feasts to that and I am toast. A perfectly round toast, that is…

Anyway, I try to have small (very small) portions of whatever I am having. So then when I go for seconds, it’s really only making up ther first “regular” portion. Does that make sense? Or am I kidding myself? It’s worked so far… but I haven’t been to many parties yet. We’ll see.

  • 47 Laurel // Dec 10, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I’m six months pregnant now and I already feel like a cow, so the prospect of holiday pounds is especially unappealing this year. Unfortunately, the holiday goodies have never been MORE appealing, and there’s the additional feeling of “Well, I’m pregnant and the baby needs more Christmas sugar…I mean, spirit! To enjoy its holiday in utero, right?” I’m just planning to do my best and pray that the doctor doesn’t yell at me at next month’s appointment.

  • 48 Haus // Dec 10, 2010 at 12:39 pm

Usually I try to stick to just the stuff I really, really love (stuffing yes, mashed potatoes and gravy no) and ignore all the other stuff. And I try to eat less/healthier the rest of the month to make up for holiday splurges.

  • 55 Amy // Dec 10, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Eating during the holidays is not easy sometimes. To stay healthy I always eat a small meal before I go so I don’t feel like I have to pack it on at the party. I would rather do that and have everyone say how svelt I look instead of hiding the pie when I walk in. Happy Holidays.

I used to be really bad at managing portions. I would eat a ton of food and feel miserable and gross. I guess now that I am 33 years old I have enough of a memory of that feeling to hold back. I have also gotten better about eating more slowly, instead of all superfast like a lion crouched over a wildebeest.

  • 71 Kelly // Dec 11, 2010 at 2:13 pm

I’ve been losing weight all year, so I actually get full a lot faster. I’ve started learning the difference between how much I WANT and how much I NEED. So I pick only the very best things on the table, get a few bites of each, and am satisfied. Plus, since I eat healthily and exercise regularly, an indulgent meal here and there doesn’t undo anything and keeps me sane!

Well, our family holiday dinners are now all planned and executed by me (altho packed, driven and prepared at parent’s house to make it easy on them). So, when I’m putting it all together, I plan healthy, and that’s all that goes, and I’m not tempted to go back to make or eat more. Our appetizer platters are all fresh fruit and veggie platters, no more chips and dip. Even desert is ok, I plan a small tart/pie (1 serving size) for each person, specifically with each person’s favorite filling. That’s all we’ve got, and no ‘seconds’ on pie. Healthy dinner with lots of veggie sides.

  • 165 Debra F // Dec 26, 2010 at 10:11 pm

I found that the time I overeat too much is at dinner (especially when there is pasta or potatoes), so I’ve taken to eating on a bread plate….seriously. It sounds like a tiny portion, but I fill the plate so I feel like I’ve got a whole plate full, and usually it’s plenty of food. If I get hungry later, I have a healthy snack. Works well at parties too. I let myself have whatever I want as long as it can fit on one small size plate.

  • 166 shel // Dec 26, 2010 at 11:47 pm

I have to laugh, my son is a vegetarian and it took me a long time to get used to it. The first time he came home from New Orleans to visit, I told him that I went to the store and bought food just for him and to go downstairs in the freezer because I bought him turkey burgers…duh. I’ve gotten much better now, he can actually eat the foods I bought for him and I learned how to make a mean veggie lasagna that everyone in the family likes.

For the holidays, I don’t indulge except for Christmas day. I promise myself that if I’m good all December, on Christmas I won’t be counting calories or feeling guilty for having an extra nut horn, or two. I also refuse to take home my mom’s leftovers because I know that’s just too much temptation to have in my refrigerator. While she pouts a bit, I know she understands my plight. From my lips straight to my hips and I swear it’s always worse during the holidays.

What I do is load up my plate, and eat until I’m completely stuffed. Then I look around the table at all of the buttery, cheese-laden foods I love so much, and I eat a little more. Then I appease my mother and Grandmother by eating a little of their jello salads. Then I practice deep breathing for about an hour, watch a movie, and then eat 1-2 servings of the desserts. To burn all of this off, I take a nap. It’s working fabulously.

  • 169 Rhi // Dec 27, 2010 at 11:55 am

I’ve lost over 100 pounds over the last 22 months…kicked it off with (controversial!!!) the hcg diet because I was so discouraged and couldn’t get motivated to start what I knew would be a LONG journey…

Now I watch portions, run almost every day, drink tons of water, and allow myself to eat whatever it is I crave so I don’t overindulge later.

So far, so good! Even over the holidays!

  • 171 Melissa // Dec 27, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Honestly, I have stopped worrying about it. My only rule these days is to stop eating when I’m full. I had to turn down a delicious buttery roll on Christmas day because it was that or finish my mashed potatoes. I only had room in my belly for one and the gravy tipped that ‘taters over the edge. The next day when I wanted a snack, bingo! The roll was still delicious and just waiting for me to slap some butter on it.

  • 172 Teegan Briggs // Dec 27, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I have a rule for myself…before I go for the junk food, I will eat something healthier and then wait 20 minutes before indulging. So…if somebody brings over lasagna, I will have a banana and some salad before gorging myself on the fattening food!

  • 173 Sara Z // Dec 27, 2010 at 1:38 pm

The recession hit our household HARD! I’m not complaining, though, because it forced us to see what is important. And is it really important to have 5 days of leftovers? I don’t think so. We tried hard to make sure we had enough, but not too much. There was no over-eating, but there was also no one hungry and not a lot of “here, take this, there is so much” in our house.

We had a very lovely holiday scaling back.

I’m a picky eater, so I can usually pass over quite a few dishes at the big family gatherings. That one has festive red and green chunks in it – no. Those have onions, never mind. No idea at all what that is, I pass.

The trouble I used to have was that when I found something I liked, I’d take a big spoonful. Or two. By the time I finished my plate (and who doesn’t want to finish, it’s good!), I was overstuffed.

This year, I took a very small spoonful of everything I wanted. By the time I finished eating, I was comfortably full and I didn’t feel like I’d just gained three pounds.

i use the rule everything in moderation. 1 cookie is better than like 7. plus i use a smaller plate and dont go back for seconds.

I Try staying away from the goodies and fattening things such as baked goods candy and things loaded with butter sugar or cream and think in your head- I’ll pay for this later and maybe that will motivate you. Try drinking beverages more than eating to help you feel fuller. If I go for seconds I try to make sure it’s something with alot of fiber and not calorie or fat filled

  • 205 laurie // Dec 28, 2010 at 9:36 am

no seconds, and do a lot of clearing and dishes instead.

Although we have the goodies in the house for the get-togethers, I send the majority of them home with my daughter, who does have the extra appetites in her house! That does not mean, unfortunately, that I might not indulge somewhat while they are here.

I actually surprised myself this year. I only put normal sized portions on my plate and didn’t feel that I had to have some of everything. And I didn’t feel deprived.

  • 211 Denise S // Dec 28, 2010 at 1:39 pm

The only way to avoid overeating during the holidays would be to have nothing good in the house. I let myself enjoy it and start over at New Years.

  • 212 Felicia K. // Dec 28, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I try to fill up on water and limit the amount of sweets I eat.

  • 213 PauleyD // Dec 28, 2010 at 2:01 pm

My strategy is to stay healthy all year round and indulge around the holiday season. I like to work out and I tend to eat clean year round, so when the holidays roll around I don’t feel bad about sampling from the goody tray.

My wife lets herself eat off of one medium sized plate and doesn’t go for seconds.

I eat my regular diet-low inflammation. I WILL cheat a tiny for a family birthday-will eat a piece of homemade cake. But if there is dinner I will only eat what I can because I want to feel well. You get used to it and just have to have discipline.

If you exercise first thing in the morning it helps you make wise decisions all day towards portion control. You know how hard you worked that morning and quite simply, you don’t want to blow it. Works like a charm.

Kudos to you being a vegetarian, it’s pretty funny how people try and get you to change cause they don’t understand your choice lol! I wish every day that I was a vegetarian but I still haven’t done it cause my entire family eats too much meat…
