(The following is a compensated review from BlogHer and Wonder®.)
EDITED TO ADD: The contest has ended. Congratulations Erin from Long Island! And a big thank you to all who commented!
My kids are not nutritious eaters, and I don’t really spend a lot of time talking about it, because I sort of believe that not many kids ARE nutritious eaters. I’m hoping that our current struggles with food will eventually fade into a tiny blip when we reminisce about their childhood. (“Ahhhh. Remember when Harper would eat only red peppers and Meredith refused to eat anything but country fried steak? Crazy days. Life is good.”)
When BlogHer and Wonder® asked if I would be interested in putting together a taste test and recording it all on video, we had to have a Pudding Family Meeting.
Me: We’re going to get some bread in the mail. Will you eat it?
Harper: Probably not.
Me: What if I told you that we’re also getting a video camera so we can make a web show about the bread?
MC: We’ll eat the bread if it makes us famous.
Me: You’re totally going to be famous.
(“Fame” appears as a different colored hat for everyone, right? Right.)
Because the kids are ultra picky, we’ve had quite a few discussions about nutrition. At six and four, they know what a protein is. They know how important calcium is. They know that fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins. They know that both sugar and television tend to slow your brain and could make you forget the alphabet if you’re not careful.
When the Wonder® Classic White Bread arrived in the mail (in a bread box that seemed to be bigger than a bread box!), it was accompanied by a can of spinach, a can of beans, the cutest video camera I’ve ever seen, and a letter listing the nutritional benefits of Wonder® Bread. Did you know that two slices of Wonder® Bread have as much calcium as an eight ounce glass of milk? Somehow, I find this comforting. (I tend to cringe when my kids drink soda. (Perhaps I’m worried it will make them forget the alphabet.) When that soda urge strikes, I will now cut Wonder® Bread into cute little shapes and serve it with the kids’ meal. Calcium needs? Fulfilled!)
My instructions? Somehow prepare the beans and the spinach to make them as palatable as possible, and then serve them up with the Wonder® Bread. I seasoned the beans with whatever seemed right, added a bit of butter, onion powder, and garlic salt to the spinach (I really have no idea what I’m doing over here), crossed my fingers, and headed to the park.
Here’s how it went down.
As you can see, the girls each chose the Wonder® Bread as their favorite. I sort of suspected they would, so my mind wasn’t blown when they dropped their utensils and continued to eat the bread. With that said, the fact that Harper licked (barely) the spinach and tried a bean? Huge leaps! (Seriously. I could tell you crazy tales about Harper and the food therapist! Really! Food Therapy!)
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. We love Wonder® Bread. And the kind folks at Wonder® want you to love them, too! Leave a comment below telling me your favorite type of sandwich to be eaten on Wonder® Bread, and you’ll immediately be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card AND a year’s supply of bread in the form of 52 coupons—each good for a free loaf of Wonder® Bread (value up to $4 each). The contest will begin on October 5. I’ll do a random drawing on November 4th and whoever wins will receive the Visa gift card and the coupons from Wonder®. (Make sure the e-mail address you leave is correct!)

My favorite sandwich: Hickory smoked turkey, Colbyjack cheese, and a handful of fresh spinach on Wonder Bread Whole Grain White that has been slightly toasted and skimmed with spinach artichoke dip.
My kids’ favorite sandwich: One slice of bologna, one slice of Colbyjack cheese on Wonder Bread Whole Grain White. (Ew.)

Best Spinach Ever – Cook in a pan with some olive oil, onions, and garlic. Pour in some splashes of cream and mix in a handful of shredded swiss cheese. Pour into a buttered dish, top with breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, and dots of butter. Bake until golden brown and bubbly.
Some people might point out that the fat content of this dish would give an elephant a heart attach. I point out that it’s all canceled out by the spinach. MEDICAL FACT.

That’s a no-brainer. Peanut Butter and Jelly. If there are potato chips in it, I don’t mind.
4 Angie N // Oct 5, 2009 at 11:24 am
My favorite sandwich on Wonder Bread is turkey, lettuce, tomato, and provolone cheese.
Wonder was only bread my mom bought when I was growing up.
5 Kelly // Oct 5, 2009 at 11:27 am
Yeah, I’ve gotta go with the PB&J, although a fluffer nutter on Wonder Bread sounds good too.
6 Lori // Oct 5, 2009 at 11:44 am
I like Wonder Bread with peanut butter. Jelly is optional, but it needs to be grape.
7 Maren Madsen // Oct 5, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Well, in my book nothin’ is better than a BLT with toasted Wonder Bread. That’s just a little taste of heaven right there.
8 Jodie // Oct 5, 2009 at 1:19 pm
No question–if it is wonder bread it must be with a kraft single and all smushed down. Smushed cheese.
9 Neena // Oct 5, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Grilled cheese with cheddar cheese and ketchup on of course, Wonder Bread. YUM!

mayo, cheese, tomato, fresh pepper.

Different sandwiches call for different kinds of bread and my very favorite way to fill two pieces of Wonder bread is with thick cut balogna, mayonnaise, yellow mustard and lettuce…never toasted, never on wheat bread, never with Miracle Whip.

I don’t want any Wonderbread, thanks. We get all our calcium from cocoa.

Bologna and cheese! I’m suddenly five years old again, eating lunch and watching Sesame Street.
16 Brinski // Oct 5, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Apple wood smoked bacon, fried egg and cheese on toasted Wonder bread. Fast food joints can’t come come close with their fancy froo-froo bread-biscuit-pancake thingys. For a lower fat option, try poached egg and turkey bacon – still yummy!

PB&J all the way! :-)
18 Lisa // Oct 5, 2009 at 8:08 pm
I’d have to say the best would be peanut butter and grape jelly on Wonderbread. It’s what let me survive grade school lunches all those years ago :)
19 Mitzi // Oct 5, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Two pieces of fried bologna with a piece of american cheese in between. (best if the bologna is well-browned on each side)
* this is not a regular item of consumption in our house, but is definitely a favorite. it also reminds me of my childhood. Throw in a cup of kool-aid and it’s like turning back time.
20 Nichole // Oct 5, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Tuna fish & Miracle Whip.
I’m impressed that Harper eats a vegetable. Any vegetable. How’d you get her to do that?
21 jana // Oct 5, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Wonder Bread is the best bread for grilled cheese, hands down. I make mine with swiss and cheddar. Mmm.
22 Betsy // Oct 5, 2009 at 9:32 pm
I don’t think you can top a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on Wonder White, unless it’s with chunky peanut butter and jelly.
23 Rachel // Oct 5, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Bologna with miracle whip, american cheese and ruffles potato chips smashed between two fluffy pieces of Wonder. Pure comfort food.
24 kimblahg // Oct 5, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Smoked turkey and cheese with miracle whip (not mayo) is my favorite. Yum.
25 Meg T. // Oct 5, 2009 at 10:36 pm
I have to say Wonder bread makes the best bread crumbs and croutons for stuffing…no kidding! But for use in sandwiches I’d have to go peanut butter honey and banana all the way…
I try not to talk about my child’s eating habits because I don’t want to jinx the days he decides to eat!
26 Liza // Oct 5, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Well, my most favorite ever would be a fluffernutter sandwich – white bread (by Wonder, natch), peanut butter, and marshmallow fluff. It’s like a candy bar only it’s all nutritious because it’s a sandwich, right?
27 Kaitlin // Oct 6, 2009 at 7:15 am
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches all the way! Yum!

Please omit me from the drawing but I needed to tell you one of my favorite sandwiches. WONDER BREAD with mashed potatoes and corn. Doesn’t sound like much, but believe me it is good! By the way, you have some pretty cute kids…..
33 angiewis // Oct 6, 2009 at 10:14 am
MMMmmm. So not healthy, but oh so delish. Wonder bread, light miracle whip, slice of american cheese, light beef balogna and some wavy lays potato chips (on the sandwich, of course).

37 Kristen // Oct 6, 2009 at 12:33 pm
I wish I could do this anonymously, but as I am trying to win here, I guess I can’t. Here goes… On Wonder Bread, my favorite is either mayo and American cheese or bologna and lots of mustard! How can this be?! I’m so embarrassed of myself!
38 Karen // Oct 6, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Have you ever had a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich? So, so good. Regular PB&J is okay, but add a little butter and a hot pan…perfection.
39 claire // Oct 6, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup. My college roommates teased me relentlessly because I very sincerely used to refer to this meal as a “feast!”
The Pudding family is adorable, btw and I love your blog!

Peanut butter sandwiches are #1 in our house. I make one every day for my five year old daughter Julia for school. It is the only sandwich she will eat given that it is cut into a shape, preferably something girly like a flower or a butterfly. (I once tried a sailboat shape. It was not popular.)

I usually think of grilled cheese (which I make with two layers of cheese and a middle layer of thinly sliced onion or pepper) or toasting it to dip into a bowl of chili.
For Wonder’s whole wheat (which I found suprisingly good) My fav is smoked turkey with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo mashed with avocado.

If I could eat sandwichs and cereal every day of my life…I would probably die young. And fat. But at least I would be happy.
Honey smoked turkey with cheddar cheese and light mayo on two slices of toast wonder bread. Whole grain.
Or!
Toasted white bread. A little bit of butter. Scrambled eggs with American cheese and chopped up slices of bacon.
Not necessarily the healthiest of choices. But delicious all the same.

I love peanut butter and blueberry jam-YUM!
143 Kara // Oct 26, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I just had tuna salad for lunch. Maybe not my favorite, but it is a standard when I need something quick and easy from the cafeteria. And they use Wonder bread. Woot!
Actually, my favorite sandwich is probably turkey with a slice of muenster or gouda, a nice red tomato slice (has to be RED, not pink), some romaine lettuce, & a bit of mustard. YUM.
(I totally should have had that for lunch.)

ham, light mayo, lots of lettuce (about 3x as thick as the ham, on really fresh, slightly squishy whole grain white bread

I think it’s a close tie in the retsbew household. I love toasted Wonder bread with BLT insides. Kiddies love PB&J. Our favorite is usually a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. The ultimate comfort food for us.

Since winter is coming, I would say grilled cheese. We love it on a cold winter night with soup

heaps of pastrami and corned beef, room-temp bona-fide Gruyere cheese, a dallop of spicy brown mustard, some slivers of onions and tater chips on the side.
And yes, I do stick those toothpicks with frilly tops in each triangular half! Thanks for asking!

wonder bread builds strong bodies 12 ways so it goes a long way towards making all the sandwiches I serve healthy. I also make sure I use low fat cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes on our turkey sandwiches so we get some calcium and some vegetables.

My eleven year old daughter likes egg salad on hers. My older daughter likes to make a grilled cheese stuffed with mushrooms and tomatos. My husband likes Chicken Salad in his. As for me I enjoy grilled egg plant, mozz cheese, and avacado on mine. Wonder Bread has been around our family since i was a tiny girl. (43yr now) If I won this my mom would say. I told you eating Wonder Bread was good for you.

Ooh, either crunchy peanut butter and honey OR mesquite grilled turkey with arugula, tomatoes, pepperjack cheese, red onions, baby spinach and spicy mustard. Okay, now I want a sandwich.

Nothing beats a ‘mater sammitch! Hot off the vine ripe tomatoes sliced super thin, with a smear of Miracle Whip or your favorite dressing (try it with ranch) and voila! A summery sandwich to die for.
