This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Lincoln.
The only head-turning car I’ve ever owned was the ten-year-old Mercury Lynx I drove in high school. It was three shades of brown on the outside with an orange interior, a leaky sunroof, and a radio that could blast my Huey Lewis and the News cassette tape like it meant business. (I was a big fan of “Naturally.” High five, anyone? No? Well, okay then.)
When BlogHer asked if I would be interested in driving a Lincoln MKT for a week, I actually laughed. Because, come on. Angela Pudding in a Lincoln? Really? Yes. Please!
A few weeks later, the vehicle rep delivered this to me:
And, yes. From the outside, you might not see it as a head turner. (Although, I do love the station wagon look. I really do!) Oh, but wait. Let’s step inside, shall we?
Harper: I want to live in this car.
The MKT is ultra-luxurious. It seats six people VERY comfortably, and seven if your seventh is a shorty. And when I say it seats six “comfortably” please know that although every seat has a great amount of leg room, what I’m referring to is the fact that the seats have temperature controls, and each passenger can control their own temperature. (Along with the heat from the seat, Jeff liked his side of the car to run at 73 degrees. I was comfy at 70. La la laaah…we felt famous in the MKT.) By the way, did you notice the two extremely large sun roofs? Yeah. It’s called a Vista Roof, and we loved it.
When you turn the car on (without a key, I might add—you simply put the key fob in your pocket, and the car starts with the press of a button), you are immediately greeted by the eight-inch touch screen.
This touch screen, equipped with SIRIUS Travel Link, includes a voice activated Navigation System that provides local traffic reports, weather reports, sporting event scores, local gas prices, and local movie listings and show times. Using Lincoln SYNC (powered by Microsoft), you can make calls from the road without ever having to dig the phone out of your pocket—all you need is a Bluetooth-enabled phone, and SYNC does all the work for you. You can also plug your iPod into the USB port, and your music appears right in front of you on the touch screen. If an airbag deploys? SYNC will call 911 for you. This is 2010, and the MKT makes you feel like You Are There, and You are Cared For. (And I realize that sounds completely hokey, because we’re talking about a car here, but really. It’s true.)
I must admit, I didn’t make full use of SYNC or Travel Link. (I can’t drive and fiddle at the same time—especially if I’m driving someone else’s car.) BUT, I did fall in love with the SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
I had no idea SIRIUS was such an amazing thing. You’re telling me there’s a station out there that plays Bruce Springsteen 24/7? Now *I* want to live in this car.

(I just wanted to show this photo to you because it reminds me of Picasso’s Blue Period. Plus, my thighs look thin, and that’s sort of rare. Wait! The Lincoln MKT will make your thighs look thin! (My claim. Not theirs.))
When Harper and I decided to go for a drive, I was a little nervous. (I’m used to driving much smaller vehicles.)
(I wonder if I always become this ghostly when I’m nervous. Perhaps it’s time for an iron supplement.) Okay. Get this. When you put the Lincoln MKT in reverse, this is what the touch screen shows:
It’s my driveway! The reverse view along with the blind spot alarms (and Bruce Springsteen), put me at ease. (The MKT I drove was equipped with BLIS—the Blind Spot Information System. When BLIS detects a car in your blind spot, an amber light appears in the sideview mirror. Similarly, when you’re backing up and a vehicle is approaching, the Cross Traffic Alert sounds an alarm to let you know that the path is not clear. I was dazzled with this.)
We drove the Lincoln MKT a LOT last week. And despite a minor issue which I believe can be attributed to bad gas (in the car, not the passengers), the ride was smooth and flawless. (The MKT earned an admirable 2.5 points on the Fluid Pudding Head Turning Scale (HTS), by the way. The coach at school called it a “beautiful car,” a pre-school mom fell in love with the vista roof, and some random guy at the grocery store watched me run my hand down the side of the driver door sensor to activate the keyless entry, and continued to watch as I sat down and got situated. I can’t really say if he was impressed with the car or with my shrinking thighs, so I’ll just give him a half point.)
Off on a tangent: On our final day with the MKT, we drove her to church. And as Jeff crossed the lot to pick the girls and I up from the front, I noticed that the MKT grill makes it look like an angel is leading you. (Or that you’ve accidentally run into an angel, and her wings are stuck to the front of your car like a big squishy bug.) Regardless. Flashy.
Admittedly, I don’t know much about cars. (You can go here for all of the official specs on the MKT.) What I *do* know is that the Lincoln MKT really impressed me as being the perfect family car—especially if your family spends a lot of time in the car. My vehicle rep told me that the model I drove was a $54,000 vehicle. This is a bit pricey for the Puddings, but I would definitely recommend the MKT to anyone who can afford it.

In a NEW car? I wouldn’t know, as I’ve never had a new one. But I think I would want many of the features you listed here, plus hybridity. Is that the right term?

I’m looking for something with good gas mileage & would LOVE a hybrid if I had the funds. I also want something smaller – I am just one person & apart from moving couches across town in the back end of my car, I do not need something big at all.
My fiance really wants our next car to be a hybrid. I’ll just settle for anything that gets me from Point A to Point B with reasonable gas mileage and without randomly stalling in the middle of intersections, which is what my old car used to do.
I would like for my brakes to work and my accelerator to only accelerate when I push the pedal. (I currently drive a camry)
I really want that cool key fob feature with the button to start. I would feel like I was a character in Back to the Future!
At this point I was something that gets more that 13mpg. Please? Unfortunately a new car is so not in our budget right now…

I am an old fuddy duddy when it comes to cars. I prefer safe, decent gas mileage and reliable. Both of our cars are 12+ years old, so I can also be called a cheapskate.
Of course I would love to have a new car, but I don’t know if I will ever buy one off the lot. I imagine it would feel amazing to do so.

You had me at seat warmers. We live in MN. My 7 year old T&C Minivan (and that’s the “new” car) has seat warmers – it is one of my favorite features.
ALSO – that Vista Roof is something that I’ve wished for my entire life. If I had this car, the next thing I would do is plan a vacation to the Canadian Rockies, or the US Rockies- or any other mountain range – because CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW AWESOME that vista roof would be in the MOUNTAINS???!!!

Good gas mileage and a good saftey rating are definitely at the top of my list.
This car looks a little fancy for us. We are looking for something that seats 6 right now (3rd baby on the way). It will be hard to give up the awesome gas mileage of our current car (a Corolla) and stay in our price rage.

Safety, safety, safety. Oh, and something that’s easy to park, which eliminates most minivans and large SUVs. I actually like station wagons.
I am looking for leg room, good gas mileage, and stability control to help keep me from having an accident when the weather gets nasty.
Gas mileage and a hatchback, in case I need to haul stuff. You never know.
And that blindspot alarm and rear-view camera would be sooooooo handy for me–I have a history of backing into things.
I too am a fan of the station wagon in all its iterations. My current ride is a ’92 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, (“The last of the Oldsmobubbles”) and yes, it’s overdue for replacement — probably not in the Lincoln price range though, but I sure do like the configuration of that thing. Since “safety” is pretty much a given with cars these days, I’m looking for good gas mileage in a car whose interior will camouflage the shedding from our faithful Yellow Lab who dearly loves to ride, combined with ability to occasionally tow a boat — pretty much incompatible requirements, but if you spot one, do let me know!

Currently I am car-less, so I’m just looking for a car en generalmente, but I think a car with a built-in GPS sounds neat!
What I look for in a car: Reliability, fuel efficiency and an accessible back seat for visitors and car seats. Bonus would be some kind of visually distinctive detail. I only learned about this after I started driving a white Corolla in a state where every third car is a white Corolla. We learned to improvise (leopard print steering-wheel cover) so we could find the damn thing in parking lots.
Gas mileage, it’s all about the gas mileage here. :)

Safety is up there, but gas mileage is the big one for me.
Now it’s gas mileage since gas prices are so high but I don’t think I’d ever have another car without butt-warmers and leather seats. I like the fact that the leather seats are so much easier to clean (4 kids make a mess out of cloth seats here) and I love my butt-warmer in this cold Northeastern Ohio weather.

The Sirius Radio and iPod hook up would definitely impress me. I have to have a halfway decent sound system in my car since I listen to music ALL THE TIME.
Looks like a nice ride, a little big and a little pricey for me, but a nice ride.
Good on gas, safe, low maintenance, 4×4, not too big (like those XXX-tra long-bed things that don’t even fit into a parking spot), sunroof (stealing someone else’s idea). How about self-cleaning, too?

I look for a car that puts up with a lot of neglect. I have a Prius, and I’m really spoiled by how excellently quiet it is (and the stereo is pretty great) and of course, a car that’s inexpensive to run for a long time.

Good gas mileage (fairly certain my next car will be a hybrid) great safety ratings, iPod port, handles well, good turning radius (I live in LA, must be able to park the car in tight spots!) and lastly, no awful blind spots! I just drove a new Chevy Malibu and you couldn’t see crap while driving, it was awful.
Wow! The MKT does indeed look like the perfect family car. Comfort is something I look for in a car. I am vertically challenged at 5’1″ tall so I have to see over the steering wheel! I also look for the convenience of four doors. Gas mileage and safetly are also important when considering a new vehicle. All of the others are perks from my perspective.
Good gas mileage. I plan to drive my current car until the wheels fall off, now that it’s paid off, but my NEXT car will probably be a hybrid…or hopefully completely electric.
Previously what I looked for most in a car was if I could afford the payments and somehow fit my famn damily all in it. My current car (which I love) is sort of like the MKT on a budget , a Chryler Pacifica (sort of like my husband is my George Clooney on a budget!) If I do get lucky enough to do some car shopping in the next year i’d love to find a hybrid I could afford and possibly fit the 3 kids and varous kid equipment in as well.

Whoa. It’s been so long since I’ve gone car shopping that I can’t imagine… CD players were novel when I last bought a vehicle! My car still has a tape deck. I’d love to have a USB port or two. And (so embarrassed to admit this) those DVD things in the backseat would be great to placate the kiddos on road trips.
I had the same kind of brief, torrid love affair with satellite radio when I had custody of my uncle’s VW for a few weeks. But I’m entirely too cheap to actually pay for it, Boss or no.
Safety and price with as little blow to my ego as possible. It is hard to maintain any illusion of coolness in a minivan.

I happen to be in the market for a new car! However, it is for my soon to be (10 days) 16 year old daughter. I think she’ll have to settle for something slightly less expensive.
I have to admit one of the big things I am looking for in my next vehicle (and I don’t think anyone else is going to say this), is a car or van or truck, whatever, that you step up into or at least don’t have to sink down to get into. I have bad hips. (not only are they fat, but they also hurt, on the inside), so getting into and out of a down low car is just too hard for me.
Safety is a must, and beyond that, I look for good gas mileage.
I have to have good gas mileage… a must, then it’s safety! Or is it the other way around.

I look for durability — will my kids instantly trash the car? Leather seats seem more durable than fabric. I also like roominess and a control panel that makes sense. Safety, gas mileage and all that, sure, but that’s the stuff my hub figures out. Oh, yeah, cup holders that REALLY hold your cup — can’t tell you how many times my kids QT slurpies have tipped over!!

The top three things I look for are gas mileage, good visibility, and storage space (in the trunk and seating).

Reliability (we are all about not having to fix it often)
And that Tom and Ray of Car Talk have given it a good review. Their opinion carries a great deal of weight in our household.
Oh, and good gas mileage. I’m always laughing at my mom’s complaints about how expensive gas is when she’s driving a behemoth.

Personally, as long as it runs well and has functioning ac/heat, everything else is pretty much a bonus. On the other hand, wouldn’t it be cool if you could get artwork on the headliner or, say, paisley seats?

What I really want in a new car is reliability. Second most, I want to be able to haul around big stuff in it.
With a family of 5, I need room. I don’t want all the kids squished into one row. However, I don’t want to drive a bus.
Outside of roominess I look for gas mileage, how well it turns (my current car turns like a barge) and power outlets. Weird things, but that’s me.
For us, safety is a big priority. Then, easy to drive, comfort and of course, good gas mileage as well! Would love all of the “extras” too!
Right now, I’d love a car that was manufactured after the year 2000. That would be a luxury for me. However, when my fiance and manage to buy a new car, we will be looking for something reliable, fuel efficient and something that I will be able to drive with children. I don’t care as much about the extras like GPS, etc…

When I bought my last car (Hyundai Elantra) I was swayed by the fact that it had an ashtray. I don’t smoke, but I like keeping change there. It’s not a standard features on cars anymore. So, yeah. Ashtray, I guess.

I look for used, high reliability rating (due to the used part), good gas mileage and room for 5 people an all their schtuff.
I would like good gas mileage, a seat that supports your back and that blind spot thingy that you blogged about. When your teenagers (yes! I had 3 at ONE TIME!) are learning to drive, this is a must because, you know, they think they own the road and will live forever, possibly in no other home but their parent’s.

Gas mileage, style and reliability are all important, but my most pressing issue when I shop for my next car is, “Can I take my dog on the test drive?” My navigator needs to like the ride, after all.

Our current car only seats 5, and three car seats in the back of a Camry makes for lots of kid squabbling. I’d like our next car to have gas mileage to rival the Camry, with a bit of space between my three girls.

That is such an awesome vehicle. Sadly, four our family the single most important feature is the ability to fit four carseats inside. Second would definitely be satellite radio, hubby’s commuter car has it & it’s awesome!
Cupholders! Leg room! Space! Big backseat for a car seat where two other passengers have wiggle room.
I am totally impractical and bought myself a convertible, 6-speed manual transmission. Woot!
The feature that’s most important to me is reliability and durability–that I won’t have to be taking it to the shop every couple of months after only having it a couple years. I need my cars to last!

We need good mileage, roomy interior, and good safety ratings. If it came equipped with a sound-proof barrier between me and the kids that would be great, too. I wish I could afford that car. Looks like a sweeter ride than my van!
I live in the South. I must have air conditioning. Everything else is negotiable.
Good mileage is my number one since I travel so much.

I like to “feel safe” in the car, I like feeling and knowing my family is secure. Comfy seats, ease of getting in & out of the car also. Prefer a car that’s not too low, I like being able to see up ahead.

I love the luxurious look of the car. Is it a car? Or a SUV? Somewhere in between, I think! I bet it has a great suspension, one that won’t make my teeth rattle as I drive down the dirt roads. I can see me now – hair flying in the wind, dust kicking up behind me. All the cows would turn their cud chewing heads to watch me pass. Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?

What do I look for? A car that goes … anywhere, any time and is mine. Right now I don’t have a car. I have to share with my husband (and borrow my sister’s truck, which is 5 times larger than this grandma needs!).
Good mileage and good safety rating. Heated seats would be nice too!
I need good safety rating, plenty of room for rear facing car seats which in turn allows plenty of leg room in the front, and space in the back for our mastiffs. Air conditioning and CD player a plus. I am easy to please as long as it is safe and spacious (but not a huge vehicle!).

Awesome car! Mostly, I look for something that runs reliably with minimal maintenance required. Next car I buy better have USB for my iPod, though!

When shopping for a new (to me) car (I always buy used to save crumbtastic depreciation dollars), I look for reliability and comfort. And leather seats. (I hate smelly upholstery.)

What we look for? Something the bank will let us finance! Other than that, mileage is good. If I really had my choice, I’d go for muscle, but ya know. Looks like you had fun with this little test drive. (Picasso Blue Period? really?)
I like my new car to be a bright color so I can find it in parking lots. And also, feel a little happier about getting on the road again. I really wish you could drive off the lot in something more sparkly.
My husband has the back up camera and the Sirius in his work car and we greatly enjoy them. But the car you had has fancier climate control.
Comfort. I am bigger than your average bear and it is really hard to find a vehicle that fits me comfortably.
what i look for in a car… is my ownership of said car. (current wheels = two separate lime-green strollers.)
All I need in a car is the ability to get me from point A to point B without having to stop at the mechanics to fix anything and to look good enough to not be embarrassing.
I like a car that doesn’t appear to be as dirty as it is–grey and black are the colors of our current cars. And, yes, I know that cars are washable–it’s just that I have some many other things to wash.
I definitely look for safety! I have to keep my son safe and I definitely need a vehicle that can handle winters in New England. It’s rough around here when that snow hits! :)
